Traders Aid...
Were that there book asposed ter end up makin ye pay more fer an item?
Cause that were wut happens when I use it ter try an' get a better deal.
If ye knows who were the durn wizard wut writ that book let me know... time fer some learnin fer them!

Appraise checks for merchants are done with a d20 roll (plus/minus your modifier for the skill). Even using the magic of the trader's aid spell book, you may have gotten a low "roll", which could still end up with you paying more with that merchant.
Each time your Appraise skill increases, the reaction is "rerolled", so the reaction might have actually gotten worse (that's not the intended result, but that's part of the randomness of D&D....you could imagine the merchant noticed something "odd" about your character all of a sudden and decided you might be using magic to try to trick him/her).
