A strategy for low-level PCs: Bandages

Post by Eric of Atrophy on Sat Aug 07, 2010 11:18 pm

Howdy, all!

Having given this advice to a player or two in the last few months, I thought I would share with you all one of my most successful strategies for keeping a low-level PC viable in this often-hostile world (other than running away): Bandages!

Every PC gets a set of bandages upon creation, and those bandages are good for 5 uses per rest (each use healing exactly 1 hp). Now, Smitty also sells bandages for 1 gold in his shop in the Vale. I take my PC in and purchase enough bandages to fill an entire inventory pane (let's face it, at low levels, you're not carrying around loads of merchandise, anyways). I put three bandages in the quickslots, so when my PC is wounded, five taps of the F5 key heals 5 hp, then five taps of the F6 key heals 5 more hp, etc. In this way I am able to have my PC recover from potentially crippling damage and continue about her business. By having a whole pane of bandages (rings in at about 60 units, I believe), my PC has access to lots of healing that takes up little space (in regards to weight carried).

Now I know that some may charge this with exploitation, but I disagree, and provide four rebukes. First of all, you must carry all of these bandages around. That in itself can be a deterrent to most folks who have a distaste for cluttered inventories. Second of all, yes, I know that each bandage is good for 5 hps of healing, so that would square out at 300 hp total of healing - but do you know how long that would take? It is very time consuming, and also puts you in harm's way (depending on where you bandaged at) - much easier to pop a potion. Third of all, the bandages are good for 5 hp per rest, and it's not always easy to rest. Fourth and Last of all, for me it makes the low level experience more immersive - I don't just drink a potion or two and get on my way, I have to stop and use bandages to make my PC feel better.

In my experiences, this has allowed me to keep my PCs in the action for longer periods of time, and not have to retreat from each and every battle to recover. Sometimes the beginning in Aenea can be challenging, and this is one way to help balance that challenge.

*****Another way this strategy helps out the new PC is that, upon acquiring the pane-full of bandages, the healing potions can be sold to Smitty for a small sum (or Sal in Campton, if you're the adventurous type). This gives the PC a much-needed gold infusion, and can go towards a Blackrose weapon or a magical defensive item of some sort.*****

Bandages + healing kits + good heal skill + cloak of the humble healer + free rest to lv4 (4hrs inbteween to lv6) == PC's living alot longer ... ..

Take off your armour, wear the cloak, use your bandages, (they add your healing skills to the amount ye recover at rest).. rest...

And do so often, whenever and where ever you can...

And christ full-healing using bandages ?.. that must take FOREVER... ... you must be a very patient man eric.... .

Well, being one of the players you gave this advice to, I have to say it really helped my monk to get started. Since her hit points were pretty low, it didn't take me too long to heal her. However I never really needed more than about 5 rolls of bandages.

I always like to be prepared. I also have a butt-load of patience, and when your PC only has about 30 or 40 hp, the wait's not too long. I usually phase the bandages out when the PC get to be about 60-70 hp, because by then she's gotten better at surviving attacks or has better armor or whatnot.
