The Oil Rig that I am working at the moment just completed a 2400 m hole in 200 m of water into a 50 m gas column, to find that the first section, the 36 inch, was unstable and the hole had to be plugged and abandoned.
They are skidding 50 meters to the side to do it all again. At 35 grand an hour, there goes 40 odd million ......

I recall a story told to me a few decades ago by a petrolium engineer about a sim occurence on a land based rig.

It seems that when they were finished with the initial hole, they withdrew the drill to change bits. During this switch, one of the crew stumbled, and dropped a hammer down the shaft. The entire project came to a sceeching halt, and a fishing team had to be placed on the scene to try and retrieve the hammer before the drill could be restarted. The process took a few very expensive days, and the site mgr (forget the term) verbally rode the clumsy crewman every day.

Eventually, they snagged the hammer, brought it up, and gave it to the Mgr. He angrily handed it to the crewman, and spouted, "You're fired!". The crewman scowled, and said, "Well, I guess I won't need this anymore!", and tossed the hammer back down the hole.

There were two positions available at the end of that day. Smile

That is a rather expensive hammer.

This is just the tip as far a prospecting goes. The oil companies are generally happy if 1 in 10 exploratory holes are successful.
