A Google Search (Jan. 8, 2013)

Post by The Amethyst Dragon on Tue Jan 08, 2013 2:24 am

I was just surfing around and decided to try something out.

Is it just me, or do the results for several Google searches (with personal results hidden) look rather similar?
nwn pw
nwn persistent world
neverwinter nights pw

That'll be because of two things*; the amount you personally have looked at the Aenea website and the amount Everybody Else looks at the Aenea website after putting those parameters into Google.

Google analytics's (or the program that reports and collates the search results, it's called something very much like this) records the first "three" things people look at on any search. It'll then match the search parameters to similar worded strings and cross reference the results, then update the database for further searches. On your computer it remembers what you have looked at (and when) and also what classification of website that is/was. Google will feed and filter your results to what it thinks you are after.... in short it'll show you what you want to see, or what everyone else thinks you want to see....

You can test this yourself.. spend a week in google searching for random things but only looking at websites that sell those things (or offer discount princes etc)... by the end of the week your first page of results will always be websites offering to sell you the stuff you searched for....

In week two focus on looking at wiki/info pages on the stuff you search, by the end of that week your first page of hits will be wiki/info pages on anything you search for.... ... ...

In summary Google has put Aenea as the first hit because you (and "the world" ) have trained it to be the number one answer for anything related to the words "NWN, PW, Neverwinter Nights and Persistent World" in any combination of those words.... in short ... well done!!!!!!!!

*you can also pay google "service fees" and add keywords into your webpage code specifically for google (from google), that highlight and bump your pages to the google search engine as "I'm a high priority response for those words, I should be a/the top answer".... ...

That's how I always find the forums when I'm on a machine that's not my own ... "giyf!" Or, more appropriately, "giaf!"
