Nov. 4, 2013: Monster Treasure Hoards

Post by The Amethyst Dragon on Mon Nov 04, 2013 7:45 pm

After a couple of days of builder frustration, some monsters in Aenea now have proper treasure hoards.

The most obvious examples of this are dragons.  Outside of their lairs, they will have little treasure.  When inside their lairs, they will have more treasure.  However, instead of being on the creature's remains, their death will spawn most of their loot in a nearby treasure hoard that can be looted.

I'm also changing to this method for beholders in their lair.  They will have the same amount of loot as before, but most of the treasure will appear toward the center of their current area, rather than all of it on the beholders' remains.  They don't have pockets or packs, so they're just being a bit more logical.

Treasure hoards remain in place for up to 15 minutes after the last loot is added, and as they are looted, the apparent amount of loot shown in and around the central chest will change.  The more affected monsters killed, the more loot will be in the treasure hoard when you reach it.

I'm still doing a little fine-tuning for the next server update, but it is all finally functional.

I've always thought that the Beholders kept all their loot stuffed into the gooey mushy fleshy folds of their huge lumpy bodies! lol! (This has actually been my visual concept for RPing.)

But it does make more sense.  Another nice enhancement to immersion!

Does this exist for "every" collection of dragons found in Aenea or is it just for specific areas ?

Do we get any idea that we have entered a "dragons lair" and that a hoard loot pile may be nearby (other than the rather obvious spawns of dragons of all ages and visible? piles of increasing gold) ?
Can we get a floaty message of "Looooot Cooooombooooo + X" (add fighting game VO) above affected monsters ?

What happens if Player A has been hunting beholders for a while (building the loot pile) and starts to move toward the hoard loot pile but gets sidetracked (RL issue) and comes back to find that Player B (that just arrived to an empty tunnel) has grabbed all the items. (ie Player A does a lot of work to build a large pile but it all gets accidently stolen by Player B that has done no work and would have got no loot for "just visiting the area" )* * * Not that this is an issue that will likely happen within Aenea's awesome player base but I can see an opportunity for unintentional possible griefing/loot camping ... ..

Can we get this added to Fort Morth / Orc Training Camp? Yes the orcs carry some stuff but most of the camps supplies are in a central storage area ?

This exists for every dragon in Aenea.  I may have missed a lair or two, but I think I remembered all of the "lairs".  Dragons in areas I haven't put a "lair" waypoint count as "traveling" and won't have their (reduced) loot moved to a treasure hoard.

PCs don't have built in "treasure hoard radar", so they won't be told that there's a possible treasure hoard nearby.  However, it's pretty safe to assume that a dragon found in a cave or cavern (and not a pet/servant of another creature) is likely in it's lair.

As far as someone else coming in and picking up treasure, yes, it's possible.  Just like if a player runs around, kills a bunch of creatures, and waits to go back to loot the remains, a treasure hoard is not a protected resource that's locked to everyone else.  We do have courteous players though, so I don't see this as a problem.

As far as the orcish training camps go, probably not.  I'm just using this for critters that should/do have large amounts of individual treasure, and most of the orcs' loot is stuff they are using to try to kill PCs with anyway.

The Temple of Teeth needs a proper hoaard.... two-foot-long teeth deserve good loot.

Thanks.  Figured I'd miss at least one lair.

I gotta say I am loving the treasure hordes.  I like that you get a good idea with just a glance if the treasure horde in question is stuffed with goodies, or is empty/doesn't have much loot in it.

I especially like that you can use the sacrificial flame on the hordes.  Particularly for say, beholders.  I'll pick through the horde, take out the really good items, and then sacrifice the remaining copper/silver jewelry and other low value stuff.
