[In-Game Item Upgrades] A Black Steel and Obsidian Plaque

* You find a black steel plaque bolted to the community board in the Sleeping Dragon Inn. It's inlaid obsidian letters are of undercommon origin, yet they seem to shift into various other written languages at you look closely at them. The writing even seems to creep into your mind, like slithering tentacles touching onto your thoughts. The plaque contains the following message, which seems to echo within your mind with an alien voice:

"Caaattle seek magic, Maaaker hasss maaagics. Ssssuperior aaaarmors, exquisssssite jeeweelriesss. Pricesss maaatching power. Maaaker knowsss your desssiiiiiresss... Maaaaker desssiiress your maaaterialss. Bring to Maaacedonia, Maaaker will humor caattle's needsss."

OOC: Much like Mythgar's Old Dwarf Wizard, I will be offering item upgrades done through The Maker. Post in this thread with your character's thoughts in response to the creepy mind-reading plaque, and The Maker will respond with a telepathic message stating what materials would be required, or if the particular upgrade is possible or not. After the 'shopping list' has been completed, post in this thread, or contact me via /tells in game, and I will arrange with you a meeting between your PC and The Maker at a time that is convenient for both of us; a RP meeting will take place and the Maker will enhance the magical properties on your items, and perhaps eat your brains if he's hungry!

The following "Spoiler" lists contain the available enhancements and their requirements. These lists are subject to change, so save yourself some grief and make a request before gathering goods.

Notes on requirements: For requirements that require a given number of "kills", this requirement will be measured by the recorded kills in the character's Battlefield Journal. Battlefield journals may be purchased in the ink-and-paper shop in Macedone, down the street from the Maker's shop.

Without a single utterance, Ophelia simply thinks...........
"Good day, Maker. I am Ophelia, Cleric of Zolaras and am wondering if you would be able to assist me in combining magics in a amulet of the Mistress of Death? I am seeking a ammy that will protect me from blows as well as allow my abilities to turn the foul undead to be fully realized. I look forward to your reply, as I will begin gathering the required regents and gold as soon as I hear from you."

Just as Ophelia is about to turn away, the plaque shifts, the letters writhing around like snakes within the shadows, and she sees a brief mental image of herself standing before a mindflayer, who appears to be feasting upon her brain. The image disappears as quickly as it came, and is replaced with the image of a black dragon exploding into a shower of blood and scales; the image shifts to five bars of adamantium glowing within a forge, which melt into amulets shaped like crude shields; shifting again, the image shows a shower of blue feathers falling around a collection of ioun stones and talismans both light and dark which rest over a green and gold bound book.

A cheerful voice starts piping into the Maker's mind as Miow stares at the plaque and concentrates:

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! I heard you make jewelry with all sorts of magics on em, so I was wondering if you could combine some of my large collection of baubles together into fewer items without, you know, disrupting the magical harmonics or something! I've got this neat amulet from this mean ol vampire that I'd wear more often if I could mix it with my dragon's skin one, and I've got this ring of night resting at last or something like that that I wear all the time, but I've got this ring that makes me a lot more fortitudinal, too, and I hate having to fumble in my pouch for it when I need it... So just think at me back or whatever and let me know if you can do that! Byyeeee-- oh wait! My name's Miow! Miow non Fharfegtuben! What's yours?

* The Maker emits some squishy, repulsive sounds, acting in a very agitated manner.*

Caaattle uunnnfiiiit..... Pooooooor taaaaste....

*After a moment, the Maker's apparent spasms cease, and he concentrates on the plaque, sending a message through it to Miow*

Back at the inn....

*As Miow starts to turn away from the plaque, the lettering shifts. As they form into new letters and words, Miow sees an image in her mind of the Maker standing over her body, tearing out her brains and throwing them into a burning hot pile of slag outside his shop, contrary to the stereotype that Illithid *eat* their victim's brains. As quickly as the image formed, it dissipates into nothingness, replaced by by a series of other images. A black dragon roaring as it explodes into a shower of black scales, which fall into several piles, each morphing into a dark bar of adamantium. The bars start to glow, as if in a forge fire, and melt into the shape of an amulet encrusted with dark red gems. The image shifts yet again, this time to several rocks of raw iron ore which melt into the shape of rings. The rings clatter over a pile of pale pink iouns gargoyle skulls, and boots made of gargoyle skin.*

As the letters on the plaque finally rearrange themselves, they relay the following message:

"Cattle wear helm of mindshielding when entering Maker's Abode, or Cattle have lobotomy. Cattle's choice"

Gog hops from one foot to the other in front of the sign, alternating between pointing at his head and waving his arms around as if to ward off an invisible swarm of bees. Having utterly missed the point of a sign he's supposed to *think* at, he finally bellows loud and slow: "Wants ta keep YOUS outta HERES!!"

(//OOC: I'd like to add immunity to sleep, fear, mind affecting, and level/ ability drain on a helm I have)

*The Maker lets out an audible sigh, and thinks it's no wonder you never see any fat illithid, and about how vacant spaces need to be filled with something to be appealing to start with. He then sends as simple a message through the magical plaque as possible*

Caaattle briiing frieeeends.... ssssmaaaarrt friends....

*The Maker pauses a moment, and then looks towards his forge before concentrating on the plaque again*

Brrriing materiaaaalls.....

*Gog's mind is assaulted by a blur of images, and the sound of a being hissing in a strange language. The image focuses into an Elder Brain of a mindflayer enclave. Foul emotions for the Elder brain tinge the image, and a final emotion of perverse joy as the Brain explodes in a shower of blood and gore.

The fluid of the Elder brain seeps into the floor, and suddenly the floor becomes a pool of blood-tinged water, with eyeballs and elf ears floating in it as if a soup.

The pool suddenly dries up, leaving behind a rotting head with amulets, gems, scrolls and vials of blood laying around it. Fine sand and blue feathers drift down over the head... silibant words murmuring as they fall....*

*Gog suddenly wakes up, realizing he dozed off, standing on his feet, in the middle of the inn.... No more voices or images come from the plaque when he looks in it's direction.*

*With a subtle hum of magic, accompanied by a yellow flash of light, Crideas appears outside the Maker's shop. He squares his shoulders, smooths his cloak briefly, and lowers himself to the ground with a wave of his hand, cancelling his levitation. He walks to the door, opens it, and walks inside*

*approaching the strange Illithid, Crideas seems uncomfortable, but steels himself for the mental contact that will come soon. He quickly removes his amulet and wills his mental defenses to lower. He tries to make eye contact with the squid-like face, and begins concentrating on images of his cloak and his robes. Once he is sure these have been noticed, he quickly shifts his thoughts to images of extremely healthy individuals and great feats of endurance. Lastly, he envisions a chest... empty, but open... awaiting someone to fill it with various things*

This time, as he wills his considerable mental defenses to lower... he envisions the patterns of the mind in focus so intent that its thought and consistency cannot be disrupted. Then Crideas envisions each of his various pieces of equipment in turn... yes... all of it. Robes, Weapon, Shield, Gloves, Cloak, Headband, Boots, Rings, Amulet, Belt. *The Maker drinks in the taste of Crideas' thoughts, relishing the "aroma" of such an intellect, a fine meal for an Ilithid of any standing.

Braaaave, muuuuch to loooose.... ssssuuuch chance thisss one taaaakes......

*The Maker considers simply devouring the brain of Crideas, but decides to merely go with the taste of such a mind, a feast compared the full ingestion of the brains of other beings. The Maker restrains himself as he imparts the required components to Crideas...

*Crideas' vision is swept into the vision the Maker shows him, feeling the Maker probe ever so slightly through guarded parts of his mind as the vision pays out. Crideas sees a tome, it's pages thick and full, the bold script of the writing detailing diet and excersize techniques to bolster one's longevity. As the pages turn as if blown by a wind, the ink blurs, and soaks the pages. Soon the pages are saturated in the ink, which bears a dark red hue to it. The ink pools around the tome, and appears not to be ink at all, but rather blood. The tome itself twists into the body of a dragon, the ink-blood flowing from many wounds. It's eyes are blank with death, yet glow with a faint pink aura as if they were ioun stones. As the vision progresses, the dragon disolved away, leaving only the ioun stone eyes, the dragon's teeth and the pool of blood. The dragon's teeth shift ever so slightly into the links of a necklace holding an amulet, and the blood congeals into small red gems, the Blood of Magic.

*The vision fades away, and replaced by a new vision. Another tome, this one written in archaic script. As before, the pages turn as if touched by a breeze. The writing details methods of maintaining focus. As Crideas studies the writing closer, the letters of the script shift into drawings of Gargoyles. The gargoyles hunch on ledges, unmoving, their eyes staring straight at Crideas. The Drawings shift off the page, and Crideas sees himself standing before actual gargoyles, their stony skin as still as stone. Their eyes glitter, and appear to be blood of magic gems. The gargoyles suddenly spring towards Crideas, but dissolve before reaching him, leaving only the skulls flying through the air. The skulls twist into the shape of dragons, and rush past Crideas, drenching him in blood flowing from their wounds. As Crideas turns to see where the dragons flew off to, he finds himself in a desert oasis. The blood on him seeps into the ground, and into the water, fading away. As Crideas gazes at the water, he feels a sense of focus, a determination like the incessant waves of the ocean crashing against the shore line over and over. As he focues on the water, he spies an amulet in the water. He reaches for it, and suddenly the vision is gone.

*Crideas finds himself in the presence of the Maker, who is gazing at Crideas intently, rubbing it's hands together slowly.

* Velvet waits for a reply, and is about to turn away, believing it *is* a con, when suddenly her senses are overwhelmed by a vivid vision crawling through her mind like tentacles. Dragons swoosh past her, causing great rushes of wind to nearly knock her over. The dragons rise up into the air, and then dive at her, approaching faster and faster. As she backs away, the Dragons suddenly morph into bars of dark, hard metal, which crash into the ground, rolling towards her with the momentum of their fall. They finally come to rest at her feet, and shatter into several amulets crafted from dragonscales, linked together with adamantium wire.

As Velvet picks up one of the amulets to examine it, she suddenly senses the presence of an Ilithid standing behind her. As she turns to face it, the mindflayer's face contorts and seems to grow eyes all over, on it's cheeks, on it's forehead, it's tentacles; The grotesque mindlfayer suddenly melts into a pool of sickly green fluid, leaving behind only the many amulets around it's neck, and a belt of vials it wore around it's waist. As Velvet reaches for the belt and amulets, a wash of water sweeps them away like waves washing away a sandcastle on a shore. When the water receeds, all that is left is a pile of clear, red gems, which dissolve into a pool of dragon's blood.

The vision fades as suddenly as it came, leaving Velvet disoriented in the common room of the Sleeping Dragon Inn.

*Crideas' request is greeted by the overwhelming vision of his brain being slowly devoured by the Maker, who seems to be completely enjoying the feast. The vision dissipates into another image of an Elder Brain, many wounds leaking copious amounts of brain fluid. The fluid pools around Crideas' feet, and congeal into clear red gems. Gabriel Stern stops by the Maker's place after hearing of his work.

Walking up, he says:

"Greetings, strange one. I have heard that you accept comissions to enchant items and equipment. I would like to improve this Amulet in several ways *holds up his amulet*. I would like it to shield my mind and my life force, as well as increase my force of personality. What do you require to do this?"

ooc: looking for mind immunity, level/ability drain immunity, and +6 CHA.

*The Maker regards Gabriel Stern for a moment, it's face tentacles twitching as if it smelled something bad.

"Caaattle deaaaad... but not deeaaad.... not fit for consssssumption. Fooooul.... disssstasteful. Tooo much gooooodnessss"

*The Maker seems to snort, or what Gabriel thinks is the equivalent to an Ilithid snort before giving the vampire the visions of the required materials*

*Gabriel's vision blurs for a moment, and he finds himself facing an Elder brain of an Ilithid enclave. As his sword cleaves the creature, Gabriel feels an alien, and morbid sense of satisfaction with entirely no just motivation behind it. Gabriel tries to shake his head clear, but the vision progresses. Dark eyeballs float in the pool of fluid hemorrhaging from the slain elder brain. The fluid and eyeballs mix with blood and amulets, flooding the hall Gabriel find himself standing in. The grotesque flood rises in a flash, trapping Gabriel.

As he blinks, he finds himself in another place, a murky mire. Elementals surround Gabriel, suddenly shifting in shapes, and condensing into four vials. As Gabriel reaches down to pick up the vials, they explode into slivers of bone and red crystals. The strange shrapnel swirls around Gabriel as he hears a sudden rush of wind. Turning, he sees great black dragons bearing down on him, each with a corpse hanging from it's vicious jaw. As the dragons threaten to crush Gabriel in their stampede, they're obliterated by the strange swirling shield of bone and crystal surrounding him. The bones and crystals swirl faster, mixing with the blood and gore of the dragons, and suddenly rush into the form of a single amulet. Gabriel picks up the amulet, and marvels at the warmth of it, the feel of goodness within it.

Suddenly the scene shifts before his eyes, and Gabriel sees a startling image of falcons and metallic dragons rearing and spreading their wings in the unspoiled sunlight. Gabriel feels the warmth on his face, yet does not feel the burning a vampire usually endures. Breathing in deep, Gabriel watches the dragons and falcons fly and dance through the air. In a final display of aerial acrobatics, the wing menagerie swoops down towards Gabriel, and just before colliding with him, transform into amulets and books, which fall to his feet. Gabriel reaches down to pick up the treasures....

Gabriel suddenly finds himself back in the Maker's shop, petting a seemingly affectionate intellect devourer as if it were a puppy. Pulling his hand back quickly, Gabriel looks up and sees the Maker simply gazing at him with dark, alien eyes. The Maker says nothing, nor sends any direct vision, but Gabriel senses that the Maker has little tolerance for any paladin or do-gooder poluting his shop any longer than necessary.

After completing the gathering and obtaining the enchantment from his previous commission, only to be subjected to a feeble but determined attack by another Mind Flayer and his Intellect Devourer pets... Gabriel returns to the Maker's Shop, less than relaxed and prepared for treachery.

Upon encountering no hostility, he speaks to the Maker:

"I have some new commissions for you. I wish this Amulet to grant me Freedom from any force or bonds that would impair me, and also to enhance my vision to pierce any Illusion and sense any foe. Then, I wish these boots to aid me in dodging the blows of my enemies. Name your price."

ooc: looking for True seeing and Freedom on amulet, and +5 AC on boots.

"Your work has been most helpful. I wish to see if you can improve my shield, now. I would like it to protect me from evocation spells, and to allow me to channel my Undead Turning powers more often. What do you require?"

"Your latest work has been nothing short of impressive, and I am most satisfied.

I would like to now improve three of my items.

For my Boots and Amulet, I wish for them to increase my natural Constitution, making me more hardy.

For my Bracers, I wish for them to grant the greatest protection possible against all manner of physical attacks. Name your price."

OOC: looking for +6 Con to Boots and Amulet. Also looking for resistance 10 to slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning for my bracers.

*In his vision, Gabriel sees a vampire with an ornate gold amulet around it's neck. The amulet glows, until it's light washes out Gabriels vision. When he is able to see again, a dark tome rests before him on a desk, surrounded by other other amulets and vials of red liquid.

The tome flies open, and Gabriel finds himself standing in a cavern. Golems, ankehgs and gargoyls battle around him, and from the heavens meteorites fall from the sky. As the maelstrom of violence ends, the remains of the battle all swirl up into the air as if carried by some wind, and condense into Gabriel's bracers.

As the vision clears, Gabriel finds himself still in the Maker's shop, with the Maker himself toiling over his open forge.

Gabriel finds himself making another visit to the strange Mind Flayer's shop:

"Considering your work thus far has been beyond expectations, I am interested in another comission.

I have a ring that I have imbued with elemental resistances. I would like to amplify them to the maximum strength possible. I would also like the ring to deflect incoming attacks and help me to heal wounds that I take. What shall you need?"

OOC: Looking to have all 5 elemental resists upgraded to 30/- (fire, cold, shock, acid, sonic), also +5 deflection, and regen 2.

Drugo walks into the strange shop apprehensively: Mr. Flayer i have heard you can improve on items and armor. I am looking to stop some spells from playing with my mind and increase the strength of my helm.

ooc: wanting to add immunity to mind affecting spells and increase the damage reduction from +1 to 5 or 6 if possible on my helm of soul guard

A woman in heavy black tinted plate makes her way into the Makers shop. Her cold blue eye's flash at the Maker behind a mute helmet with a look of distrust but the knowledge that it is the only thing that can help her.

"I have heard from many that you do fine work so I have come here with my own requests. I am in need of three things to be done to my helm. I wish for you to enable it to protect my mind which your kind so love to try to take, to protect me from spells and to allow me to better understand the world around me. A slight wisp of shadow detaches from a darkened corner of the Inn and quietly settles in front of the black steel plaque mounted upon the wall. As a shadowy hood and dark cloak are tugged aside, a woman is revealed, with vivid fiery hair, pale eyes and slender ears of elven heritage. The woman stands silently before the plaque, deep in contemplation, then closes her eyes.

A picture forms of a small room and many fresh bodies, all with gaping slice wounds, falling to the floor. The red-haired woman quietly enters the room, effortlessly avoiding the numerous fresh corpses and seats herself at a small writing desk. She unrolls a piece of white parchment and pulls a quill from the desk, then dips it into the blood pooling at her feet. She begins writing with a fluid and graceful style.

"To the Maker of Macedone, the Artisan of Varied, Wondrous Things,

Many have spoken at length of your abilities with augmentation magics. As I desire enhancements on some of my own items, I have sought you out and humbly place these requests before you.

the Maker's list for STR upgrades will be very similar to the Dwarf Wizard's... which will include +6 worth of STR items per +1 enhancement you want.... might be easier to just grab a +6 belt from a merchant? And with the dex... you have +6 on three items for a total of +18... the total enhancement from items that anyone can make use of is +12... I'll do the +6 on the sword as well if ya really want (maybe you switch rings?), but the two rings alone will put you at the max +12. Just so ya know in advance Smile

*The Maker hisses and mutters crude and obscene things about Gnomes, how strange they taste, and how two gnomes is more than enough for one week before addressing the Gninja. With a dismissive wave of his long fingered, spindly hand, the Maker voices his thoughts, "Straaaaaaange and queeer gnome speaaaaks of self in thirrrrd perrrrrson. Siiiign of deraaaangement. Siiiickness of Brain. Unsuitaaable fooooooooood. Briiiing Mateeerials, and will maaaake gnoooome's possssssesssions ssstroong. Weaaar mindshieeeld heeelmet when returrrn.... disstasteful gnome thoughts aaaaaare." The Maker then sends a series of images to the Gninja, showing the required reagents. The Gninja gets the sense that even in the brief mental contact required for the image projection, the Maker wishes for much more distance between himself and the gnome.

For elemental resists (-/30 maximum):
1 Elemental essence (fire for fire, air for shock, earth for acid, water for cold, for sonic, use an alchemist dragon's egg and diamond), 1 crystal of the type element to be resisted, 10 greater elemental reagents of the element to be resisted (Icy Skeleton's knuckles for cold, firebombs for fire, 10 acid bombs for acid, thunderstones for sonic, a Ring of the Chain for electricity), 3 lesser reagents of the element to be resisted (3 tiny amber rod for electricity, 3 blue falcon feather for sonic, 3 cinder-troll bloods for fire, 3 fish scales for cold, 3 crystalized acids for acid), a scroll of Energy Buffer, 1 tiny vial of elemental water, 1 dragon's blood, 1 blood of magic, and 10,000 gold per -/5 of resistance to be added. Item must already possess at least -/10 of the elemental resistance to be increased)

For Regen (+2 maximum):
A scroll of regeneration or monstrous regeneration, One dragon blood, 2 pearly white spindle iouns, 1 Spark of Life potion, 1 Potion with Bite, 20 leaves, 2 Blood of Magics and 75,000 gold per +1 of regen to be added

For bonus AC (+5 maximum):
5 dragon scales, 2 dragon bloods, 2 dusty rose prism ioun, 2 Blood of magics, 10 Frosted Quicksilver potions, 2 gargoyle skulls, 2 bars of adamantine, +5 worth of AC items of the same bonus type as the item to be enhanced, and 10,000GP per +1 AC to be added.

OOC: just want to make sure Im doing the math right.... to go from 10/- electrical resistance to 30/- resistance would need 40 rings of the chain? (havent ever even seen one of them, but I assume that is the correct in-game name of the item?) And for acid, I would need 400 acid bombs? (4 steps of 5/- from 10/- to 30/-, with 10 acid bombs counting as one 'greater elemental reagent' which I need 10 of per +5 resist?)

On the regen, the 'potion with bite'... is that the actual in-game name of the potion?

Lastly, for AC.... I would need 50 frosted quicksilver for a +5 bonus?
