Favored Enemy (for us rangers out there)
Now that I have been told of my silly mistake (favored enemy adds to damage not attack) I would like to ask that favored enemy adds both damage and attack or at the least just attack. While up to +9 to damage is nice ,in the world of Aenea where elemental damage can be quite easily added to weapons the up to +9 damage seems very pathetic especially since favored enemies is one of the only things rangers have over fighters. While +9 attack and damage +9 may seem like over kill in the end I would still prefer (and many of my ranger counter-parts would as well) the bonus of favored enemies to go towards attack instead of damage for if you can not hit the enemy in the first place the extra damage is useless. And of course to make it sound more PnPish if you spent your entire life training how to kill something wouldn't you find easier ways to hit it.

Sounds reasonable to me ... I wonder if can do it? I'm sure he could find a way ...

Re: Favored Enemy (for us rangers out there)
I like it, but ..
seems to me the added bonus to attack would be a bit too much.
Why would you be a fighter when by lvl40 you get +9 against pretty much everything?
I will play a ranger regardless, just seems overpowered.
perhaps something more in line with the 3.5 rule set :
1. A d8 is used for hit die.
2. Skill points are 6 + Intelligence Modifier.
3. Combat Style feat at second level (either Two Weapon Fighting/Ambidexterity for the default 2da or Point Blank Shot for the archery 2da).
4. Advanced Combat Style feat at sixth level (either Improved Two Weapon Fighting or Rapid Shot).
5. Evasion at 9th level.
6. Hide in Plain Sight at 17th level.
7. Discipline as a class skill.
Something like "Grey Wolf's 3.5 Ranger"
http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Hakpaks.Detail&id=41
May need to make the Ranger either always archery based or always TWF.
I would favor the Archery, as it more suits the Ranger 'model'.
Could always add the twf much later, ie 18th lvl+.
I would like to see the ranger progressed more as a 'Ranger' rather than a tank.

reason to be a fighter instead of a ranger? 20 more feats by level 40

Re: Favored Enemy (for us rangers out there)
OK, OK, I suppose feats are OK.
I am thinking more in terms of a Ranger though.
+ 9 seems like a BIG gift.
Couple that with a very effective animal companion ...
maybe the 3.5 stuff could be implemented by a demi-class, might be possible to run both the archery and melee options that way.

Re: Favored Enemy (for us rangers out there)
I agree +9 is a LOT of attack bonus.... but Its not going to be +9 against almost everything* per se.... the other favored enemies get less bonus.... still, may want to cap it at +6 or so....

With Rangers, all the favored enemies get the same bonus.
Add to that you can take favored enemies as epic feats ........

Re: Favored Enemy (for us rangers out there)
animal companions are good at first then become really crappy and then around level 25 ish (if you are crazy and take that many levels of rangers...I'm pretty shure I'm the only one) then the animal companion because more use full again. Now I'm not saying that I don't love Glor , hes awesome and can smash his way threw skeli's and small enemies ,but the thing is your more of a DPS as a ranger then a "hey I can hit every enemy that walks my way character" which (at least in my mind) favored enemy is kinda supposed to do. you are really good at hitting and killing certain enemies which you choose (yes I agree +9 to attack would be broken) and the rest of the little guys you just smack apart with you animal buddy and duel bastard swords

Re: Favored Enemy (for us rangers out there)
DPS? Not familiar with that particular acronym O_o
Would it have to be +9? Why not 1/2 rounded down? A +4 would put it on par with a fighter with epic weapon specialization, but not applicable to every enemy, just the favored ones.

Re: Favored Enemy (for us rangers out there)
I am liking the sound of all this.
I must admit that I tend to add a couple of levels of something else.
In order for it to scale maybe a bonus to attack could be in the form of every second FE.
or 0.5 attack per FE rounded up or down, up may work better as it would kick in on the first FE.
I would rather see some of the 3.5 rules implemented though, like evasion, HIPS and +6 skill points.
I tend to roam along though, so skill points are a favorite of mine.
I Know that similar things can be achieved by adding Rouge and SD, but...
Edit : every second FE ... should have read Manny's post properly first.

DPS = damage per second i.e. good at hurting many little guys in a short period of time

Re: Favored Enemy (for us rangers out there)
I agree that a bonus to attack of at least half the damage rounded up should happen for the ranger favored enemies..like this...
NWN is good for ranger's in that the FE bonus is universal across all your enemies (it doesn't scale down for enemy 2+), and also PnP states that if an enemy is immune to crits/sneak att then it is immune to FE damage also... NWN doesn't do this... ( See notes here ) .... ...
... but as Aenea is such a high AC world, not hitting something your trained to specifically kill is kinda annoying (not that I've personally come across this, Jay manages to hit all his favored enemies).. ..
Ranger Level | 1 | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 25 | 30 | 35 | 40 |
Attack Bonus | +1 | +1 | +2 | +2 | +3 | +3 | +4 | +4 | +5 |
Damage Bonus | +1 | +2 | +3 | +4 | +5 | +6 | +7 | +8 | +9 |
