Supermegapowerful unidentifiable item!

OK, so I've got an item that's apparently too powerful to be id'ed by either myself or the NPCs I've asked so far. Fair enough, I'll just have to take it to an altar or wait to come across someone who can identify it later, right?

But I've noticed that when NPCs (or me, using my Identify Item skill) try to id it, but fail, I'm still getting charged the fee. Is this supposed to happen? If so, can I just take a moment to gripe a bit, as it seems kinda cheeky for someone to be like, "Sorry, dunno what that does. That'll be 125 gold, please."

Hello there! Well, i think the fee you have to pay represents the components and ingredients that were consumed by casting the spell, be it "Identify" or "Legend Lore". That has been taken over from PnP, where the casting of those spells consumes components. Best strategy would be to find a player with a high lore skill who is able to identify your stuff and will do so for free (well, Eowarion will ). Look for a guy in red and ask him. Even if i´m not able to identify your super-relic, i will not charge you anything.( Let me guess, it´s that stick from the old guy at the inn?)

I never played PnP, and admittedly have little in-depth knowledge of old skool D&D rules (NWN was basically my introduction to D&D). I suppose the loss of gold makes more sense now.

For those that invest in Lore, I recommend getting a couple of Lore +5 rings available at least one location near the Vale. The investment quickly pays for itself, and may save a bundle at certain altars.

Yes, that's the other problem: I've been neglecting my Lore skill thus far in favor of crafting, since I also really really like to be able to tinker with my character's appearance.

Basically, I need more skill points.

I plan on making a bard eventually, as I really quite like them (they might even be my favorite class), and all the new Aenean bard songs look really cool and fun. But I thought it best to start with an "easier" character (ranger) while I got used to playing on a PW, explored around and learned how to do stuff.

Laeryn is also a wizard, however (possibly aiming towards Arcane Archer... haven't decided yet), so I hope to be able to develop her lore skill enough to get by most of the time.
