Starting Feats Empty Starting Feats

Post by Skywatcher Sun Aug 29, 2010 8:01 pm

OK, a dumb question. Is it possible to redo a feat selected at character creation? Skywatcher took weapon focus: shortsword at level one and it is totally worthless to her now, and it is messing up some of the stuff I would like to try with her. I have all my relevel scales, so my question is, can I use the scales and maybe have a DM or The Amethyst Dragon meet me in the relevel chamber and Leto that feat off and another feat on? Or should I learn to live with past decisions?

I'd say it's best to learn to live with some past decisions. The relevel scales do let you unmake all those decisions back to before taking 2nd level, but I can foresee a continual demand for DM help for this sort of thing.

I don't intend on expanding options (or expectation of DM involvement) for the use of relevel scales (which are already far closer to "video game function" than "D&D game function"). While I don't enforce role play, I do think that the very basics of a character (such as initial decisions made at character creations (race, class, base skills/feats, etc.) should remain a part of that character.

About the best that you could do there was rebuild the PC, and change the name slightly to avoid that whole database-same name hiccup. Done it a few times myself ... that becomes problematic, though, with a PC that has lots of levels to re-love...

slight threadjack here... more on topic comment, I agree with The Amethyst Dragon here completely. Too much hassle to get a DM to fix something like that, as once done for one, it has to be available to all...

More off topic.... I must admit that one feat I chose all that time ago on my mage, Aseph, has actually turned out to be useful now. Combat Casting; a feat I largely regard as useless on most circumstances, as you should have a high enough concentration to bypass most any check for damage even at the standard penalty, or you can simply use Defensive Casting at a concentration skill of 25 or so, has become useful again by granting me a +4 to epic magic checks.

Hurray for dumb luck!

Well, I am glad you were lucky, but for skywatcher it means no epic magic without giving up lvl 7 as weaponmaster. Or starting over, which I am reluctant to do. But she got this far without it, I guess she will be fine without it going forward.

Would a custom item with a feat or two attached be the way to go?

Doesn't Combat Casting just offset the -4 penalty in Defensive Casting Mode for being too close to enemies? That's why I've always just taken Skill Focus instead.

Yes it does, but it now also grants you a +4 to your minimum roll for Epic Spellcasting in combat. Thus it has a bit more usefulness now than before.
