Just noticed this...
Dont cast many spells with my ranger... so I dunno how long this change has been in... but...
Why was grease removed from the ranger spell list?
It was pretty much their only good 1st level spell.

Re: Just noticed this...
Also, what's the purpose of bladethirst now since rangers get greater magic weapon on the very same spell level?
By the time a ranger gains access to 3rd level spells, GMW is already doing +4, while bladethirst is capped at +3 (and is also restricted to slashing weapons only while GMW can be cast on any weapon)

Re: Just noticed this...
Grease - not a ranger spell in 3rd Edition PnP D&D...plus I just felt like the spell doesn't fit rangers (here, let me conjure a mass of greasy, slippery, fat out here in the middle of nowhere). The entangle spell is more their specialty anyway.
Bladethirst - I just never thought about this spell when I gave rangers greater magic weapon...I've never used it with any of my characters, so I guess it slipped my mind. I'll have to look into this. I might just remove greater magic weapon from the ranger list and make bladethirst function the same as greater magic weapon.

Does GMW/Bladethirst work on bows? Could be a nice boon for rangers

Re: Just noticed this...
Bladethirst only works on slicing melee weapons, I believe. GMW works on anything; much better choice.
Grease could be explained by use of all the innards, fats, and oils used in skinning and tanning. Or from the corpses of other dead foes *tosses a foot underfoot*

Re: Just noticed this...
I sort of like the idea that rangers have their own "weapon spell" similar to how paladins have holy sword, deafening clang, and bless weapon.
how about making it scale with the enhancement bonus (+1 per 4 CL. Scales slower than GMW, and at +1/4 CL, it's still +3 when rangers gain access to it.).
Also, to make it something more than a slower-levelling version of GMW... have it work on all weapons, and add a temp property "extra melee damage: slashing".... OR... to make it a "blade thirst" spell... have it add some vampiric regen.

Along the lines of what I was thinking. Rangers deserve a way to make their weapons +5, and vampiric regen would bring it in line with Holy Sword, and give it some "teeth" (pun intended)
Superb.

Re: Just noticed this...
Vampiric regen doesn't really fit thematically with the nature-orientated ranger class. I'd go with the extra damage if keen is a bad idea.

Leeches, Mosquitos, Ticks and plenty of other blood-draining parasites are quite natural. The name of the spell being Blade Thirst also makes a case for it.

Ye know what I'd like to see... maybe a toned down Soul Reaver quality for any weapon it's cast upon.. it makes the Blade Thirsty ...

Re: Just noticed this...
I was thinking of having it add the enhancement bonus to any weapon type, plus the wounding property if the weapon is piercing or slashing (you know..."bladed weapons").

Re: Just noticed this...
Will the enhancement scale with caster levels, or will it still be a flat +3?

Re: Just noticed this...
I'd say scaling up to +5 (maybe at +1 per 4 ranger levels). When do rangers get 3rd level spells, anyway? I don't recall ever playing a spellcasting ranger myself.MannyJabrielle wrote:Will the enhancement scale with caster levels, or will it still be a flat +3?
Re: Just noticed this...
Techinically 11th level, but that's only through bonus spell slots from high wisdom. They gain the first base spell slot for 3rd level at 12th.
So yes, +1/4 CL would scale nicely, especially in comparison to GMW which scales at +1/3 CL
