Re: Game Night Screenshots
The heroes first met in the Town Hall to discuss their information and plans.
After capture and imprisonment, the captive High Murderer from the previous mission to the depths of the Temple of Sorgath had revealed that the Scholars were being murdered by Sorgath's own elite assassins, based on orders from the 'Grand Corrupter' who oversaw the 'Great Temple'.
Further questioning revealed that the High Murderer believed the Grand Corrupter was issuing orders received from Sorgath himself, and that the Great Temple was located deep underground, found by following the deepest river.
When the idea of Veleron's involvement came up, some of those assembled were moved to plead for his redemption, and salvation from his Vampiric curse. Further discussion involved many points, including how Veleron's blood was half-demonic and could never truly be redeemed, how his crimes overshadowed the crimes of any being in the material plane and the only just punishment was execution, and also that Veleron was not the immediate problem - it was the assassins targeting scholars who needed to be stopped.
After some further deliberation, the outcry for mercy and forgiveness was quelled in favor of pursuing the immediate concern - saving the scholars and stopping the murders.
To find the river, it was decided to travel to the Underdark, and the Northwest Prairie was the chosen entrance, via the Temple of Sorgath found there. The heroes walked those halls as if intimately familiar with them now - fending the Drow Trainees and Warriors blades and meting out harsh justice upon the foul worshipers of the Lord of Lies, Murder, and Deceit.
Upon finding the passage to the Underdark within the temple, they traversed past the Arcane Abyss - advised to steer well clear of the Witch who had battled Archmages and lived - and came upon the underground river at last. They followed it diligently, making only a couple of missteps. The second of which nearly dumped them into a hive of beholders, but thankfully some were accomplished hunters of the Eye Tyrants and cleared the area allowing for a coordinated withdrawal.
At last the city of Selimyth was found. Inside a veritable horde of Drow devotees to Sorgath were found - many of whom were hostile, though some cowered in fear of the 'invaders'. In the end, some amount of needless bloodshed ensued in the confusion, but the Great temple was located.
Battling up to the Temples upper levels, they found a crowded room full of Drow trying to protect the Grand Corrupter, known as Selina. As her guardians were cut down and driven off, she was quickly disabled by magic. The questioning proceeded quickly once her mind was overtaken, and she was compelled to speak of the murders.
She spoke of her mandate coming from Lord Highfang, the leader of Selimyth for the previous several centuries. Under his leadership, their city had been safe and prosperous - so much so that it was widely believed Highfang spoke for Sorgath himself - and the Grand Corrupter believed Sorgath approved of this.
She did not know why Highfang had ordered the murders of scholars, nor had she ever met him. He sent all his communications by magic, but she knew that he could usually be found within his home, the highest tower in the city, close by the Great Temple itself. She indicated that he enjoyed traps to defend his home and test his visitors' worthiness. She did not know of a way to bypass his defenses, but this deterred the heroes not at all.
When presented with the choice to surrender and face the judgement of King Harmon of Nektaria, or to face her likely demise at the hands of the heroes - or worse, Lord Highfang after the heroes informed him of her weakness... she took her chances with Lord Harmon - transported to the custody of his Royal Guard in the form of a petrified statue.
The heroes breached Highfang's tower and cautiously traversed up each floor avoiding traps as best they could and battling his increasingly powerful minions and guardians.
At last, they stood face to face with Highfang himself, standing near a sinister looking chessboard deep in contemplation - and he seemed at ease despite the presence of the well armed and battle-ready heroes. Indeed, he seemed only mildly perturbed at their intrusion.
As the heroes tensed for battle, a terse conversation took place. Highfang admitted that he had ordered the murders in order to aid Veleron and place Veleron is his debt. He also spoke of a mysterious red crystal that he has been entrusted with.
After "persuading" Highfang that Veleron was a liar and puppeteer and that he would not make good on the deal with Highfang, then 'convincing' Highfang that the immediate consequences of not handing over the crystal to the angry heroes currently outweighed Veleron's eventual wrath for handing it over - Highfang agreed to relinquish the Crystal.
As the heroes examined the prize, distracted, Highfang quickly seized his chance to sneakily teleport away. Some magics were used to record the resonance and signature of Highfang's Teleport spell's destination for later research and tracing, but since the murders would likely stop when news of Highfang's treachery reached the worshipers of Sorgath, the murders would most likely cease - so the immediate concern was making use of the Crystal.
Previous lore revealed by very powerful divinations and long years of diligent research had indicated that six such Crystals existed - each one was a 'key' tuned to a piece of the Great Blood Crystal in the Dark Realm, from which Veleron's bloodline drew their power -and after being corrupted further by Veleron himself, now provided invulnerability as well. The ritual which bound the Great Blood Crystal to the Dark Realm and provided this unimaginable power could not be broken while the Great Crystal was anchored to the blasphemous energies of the Dark Realm.
Only by pulling the Great Blood Crystal across the planes themselves onto the material plane, could the ritual be broken - and to do this, all six keys must be acquired, and properly placed at the strange sigils in the Calithian desert - located on the Great Ruby Road.
The heroes made haste to the desert, standing upon the sigils as they chanted the words to reverse the infernal pact - anchoring the key and its corresponding fragment of the Great Blood Crystal to the Material plane.
Now two such 'key's had been activated. Four remain, but where?
