Partially Used: A golem.
A way to build or summon them, for mages, would be pretty great.

Re: Partially Used: A golem.
Yea that would be cool. I suggested it a bit back that a mage could thru his travels in various very deep very dangerous areas like beholder land, illithid land and so on find the 6 parts to a golem. Then return with them and craft it in the workshop.
It could eat xp and gold and then give a widget that allows you to summon a shield guardian or iron golem or such depending on which command you used to create it. Something like *enchant enh iron golem* or *enchant enh clay golem* and so on.
It would need to be a high level item...say a level 21+(epic) mage to create though. I dont think would want 30 golems wandering about...kinda spoil it with over-saturation.

Hmm...
A wizard could normally make golems at the lowest level of 12 I believe. There are several ordinary types of golems, followed by more exotic and custom ones.
Common golems include flesh golems (low level golem that heals from electric spells), clay golems (low-medium level golem that has stat boosts based on elements cast on it), stone golems (medium-high level golem), iron golem (medium-high level golem that heals from fire), and juggernaut golems which are epic leveled.
Common golems that function as a secondary familiar include the homunculous, and for druids there is a construct they can build as a secondary companion in addition to their animals. Began with the letter 'B' and it was made of plant material, chitin, and bug wings and legs.
Exotic golems that are very rare and difficult to make include Bone Golems(heal from negative energy), Gem Golems, Nimblewright(sentient self-serving golems with intelligence usually much higher than their creators, combined with their free-will makes them hard to control), and various 'Guardians' such as those that function via amulets.
All in all, cheapest golems range from a cost of 5,000 to 10,000, with expensive ones requiring materials spells components and time to make costing as much as 500,000 to 25,000,000 gold.
All golems tend to take at minimum of 2-3 months of working to complete, and the intended owner of the golem must be the one to construct it in all cases excluding some types of exotic golems.
Constructs such as the Homuncolous can be constructed in as little as 3 weeks and unlike other golems can be done while going place to place so long as the mage remembers to stop to continue construction. The Druid's familiar requires almost constant tending but can be constructed in as little as 5 days. Unlike the homuncolous, a druid's familiar retains either a Neutral Good or Chaotic Neutral alignment and like Nimblewrights are fully aware of their surroundings and self-conscious, but unlike Nimblewrights they are highly dependant on their creator.

Golems do tend to need a magical item to be consumed and if the golem is a type that does not heal by absorbing an element or regenerates they require smithwork to maintain, which can cost much gold.
Considering most mages don't have the funds while at low levels to make and maintain a golem, the simplest of golems are often kept by high level mages, a golem such as a shield guardian, iron golem, or nimblewright would be found in possession of only the most wealthy and elite of arch-magi. Make note that Elminster himself is too low a level and even if he had 5 billion gold and the time on hand it would be impossible for him to own and maintain a low level shield guardian.
A mage also needs to remember that they can only control as many as 3 golems at a time too, as a wizard must not only shout commands but maintain a concentration check as well to ensure they properly function while carrying out their duties.
In regards to self-conscious constructs like the Nimblewright and bonus familiars they do not count to this limit, but you can only have 1 homuncolous at a time, and a Druid can have only one... Boggle at a time. Was it called a Boggle? I know Nimblewrights can cost as much as 250 billion gold to make, so in most campaigns, and games, you don't see them unless its the runaway pet of a lich or a standing remnant over the ruins of a long lost arcane civilization.
PS: Constructs cannot be healed by healing spells excluding the Homuncolous and Boggle due to high concentration of organic material. To heal a construct please go to a smith or cast the spell Minor, Light, Moderate, Serious, or Critical Mending. Mending spells also repair mundane items made of metal, wood, and cloth.
