Jun. 15, 2012: NWNCX (optional, but highly recommended)

Just letting everyone here know that virusman has released a new version of NWNCX. Actually multiple new versions in the last couple days. He's up to version 0.2.4.

The new version uses a more basic patching process than before, so antivirus programs shouldn't be tripping over it as much as the older version. It does take a couple extra easy steps this way, but the download includes a handy readme.txt file with instructions.

I updated my NWN with it, and will soon (with the next hak update) be implementing a few new visual effects for some spells (for those with NWNCX). The newest version allows the addition of new "texture replacement" visual effects, like the ones with barkskin and stoneskin spells. First off, the spells flora's plant armor and camouflage will be getting new visuals. I may even start experimenting with new "beam" effects, since NWNCX now allows those to be added as well.

So, yeah. NWNCX. Optional, but highly recommended.

Ok, so I installed it and everything.... so now what?

The readme file which follows in the new nwncx.rar pack does not explain what to do with the 3 new 2da files in it's folder. Am I correct in, that they simple need to be copied into the override folder or is there something else to it?

Now, you just play as normal, and when I get to updating the Aenea haks, I'll be adding some new visual effects for at least a couple of spells.

Ah, I forgot about the 2da files.

Nothing needs to be done with those. They're included for builders/custom content makers to add new effects (generally via a hak).

By the way, in the readme file it stats the old patcher file was removed. Yet I see it's still in the .rar file, oversight or just there for ease of use for those which want to use the simpler/quicker way of patching?

The one in the .rar file is the new patcher.

When using NWNCX, you have two options:

a) patch a clean nwmain.exe (ie, not previously modified with a camera hak or anything) with the included "patcher" program
or
b) start NWN with the "loader" program included

I finally got around to considering installing NWNCX, and I'd like to know if we are up to using 2.5 yet? Or should I install the previous version, 2.4?

Yes, just go with 0.2.5.

All rightie, I've installed NWNCX 2.5! I chose the Launcher method, since I didn't want to change my NWN program executable (even though I'm pretty sure I have an unaltered one).

I really appreciate it killing the Bioware login procedure, and I'm glad it works with my Gnomish Log Rotator. I hope the NWNCX Launcher mode will also work with Alundaio's launcher, if I ever get around to that.

So where can I see any visual changes that this had made? I walked my toon a bit down the road and didn't notice any obvious differences.

The very first difference is the Trailblazer of Gort in the Sleeping Dragon Inn will have an orange visual glow to his staff.....

The latest version of NWNCX, version 0.2.7, replaces the in-client multiplayer server list that was dropped by GameSpy.

If using the patched version, there's no need to re-patch. Just add the updated .dll files to your NWN folder with the others.

If using the loader version, there is a new version of the loader which now accepts command line additions in shortcuts just like nwnmain.exe.
