Jan. 15: Magical Headwear
I will soon be adding in some graphically improved magical headwear. The first to change will be the good old headband of intellect, followed by a few other items.
The circlets will be for circlets/headbands/crowns, the lenses will be for things like eyes of charming and eyes of minute seeing.
For a preview of what I've got done so far....

How did you achieve this? i know that nwn swaps the entire head when it does it. Are you making a dupe head for every model in game then?

Visual effects, rather than head/helm models. Can this be done with other things - for example, bracers or boots? Wouldn't that be cool!

Unfortunately, the head and (I think) chest are the only places you can align visual effects with. I'd like to be able to do it with other parts, but the game engine just can't handle it.
The additions are going to have to wait about two weeks. Sorry. I ran out of time due to cleaning and packing for vacation (I leave for the airport in about 8 hours). I've got much of the things coded, but haven't been able to test them out yet. Once I know they work, I'll be adding them in and enabling those with the standard headbands of intellect to swap out their old one for an updated one.
I do know that when using such an item, you will be unable to wear any other headwear (helmets, other circlets, other lenses, etc.). This is a limitation put in to prevent overlapping of items in the head slot. Plus, it enables me to add in versions of the headband of intellect that, unlike the scarlet and blue ioun stone, provide a constant bonus to Int so that spell slots don't vanish every 3 rounds.

What i think would be cool would to also change the tatoos that come with the game. I think they are horrid lookin. Someone on the vault released a hak with all kinds of awesome aztec and mayan lookin ones and they would rock.

I'm in the process of testing the headwear. The new headband of intellect properties are working properly, but I'm tracking down a scripting error that is making it so the headbands themselves don't show up.
Hopefully it will just be a matter of another day or two.

Now I know what MannyJabrielle was talking about when he said my character "flashed" his! Now I won't feel comfortable Resting in my loin cloth around anyone - who knows who has downloaded similar haks!

If you want an override version of a hak that replaces default content, just open the hak file in nwhak.exe (in your NWN/utils folder), select the desired files, then export to your NWN/override folder. Things that don't override default content won't show, but the stuff that does, will.

It should be live tomorrow (January 15th). The new headbands of intellect will start to appear in loot drops. PCs with old style headbands will be able to use the VC command updateitem hoi (which will look in the head slot for an old headband of intellect, and if one is found, replace it with an updated one).
If/when you get a new one, be sure to read the item's description, which should answer your questions about how to use it properly.
The benefits of the new helms take effect immediately. The visuals of the circlets are on a 1 minute cycle, so they may take a while to vanish upon removing the item.

Hmm i seem to be having some issues, iggy tried to wear a headband of int and when i try to ready it it says *you are already wearing headgear* but i have never worn anything ever on iggy.
Would the fact i tried to ready a prizmal headband/helmet cause it to fubar...thinking one is on yet isnt on?

Try using the VC command pc tool reset vfxheadwear. I just added the command last night and haven't had a chance to try it yet. It should take care of that little problem.

Yea that worked....btw is the helmets spose to show as equipped on your inventory page? cause it just pops back off and into my inventory.

Naw Kef, it is supposed to pop off. The way Bioware made the game, the helmet would actually *replace* your characters head, which would defeat the purpose.... so set it up so the helmet comes off automatically so the VFX can be applied in its place so you see your normal head with the headband graphic.
The bonuses from the headwear are added to your creature skin.
My only question is, do the stat bonuses cycle with the VFX one that one minute timer? Im hoping the stats do not cycle, as this might mean that the bonus could fade while resting and render bonus spells slots from INT unusable... which would cut the effectiveness of the INT headwear by 50%.

The bonus is constant. It's an actual item in a creature slot, rather than a cycled effect.
The slots might be wiped with each server reset (just like with a normal headband of intellect), but they shouldn't be through resting.
It's only the visual that cycles every minute. The other stuff is constant.
