1/12/09 a craptastic night
I can say with honesty. I have had my car "legally" stolen.
I got out of work tonight. On the way home, I stopped to get a baconator at Wendys.
I left the parking lot, and not a mile down the road, a cop pulled me over.
Apparently he didn't like me having my marker plate in my back window (I used to work in hartford and didnt want anybody stealing my plate).
He ran the plate and it came up as an expired registration.
When he told me that, all I could think was, "how the hell could I have *not* been notified?".
I asked the cop what address he had in the system, and the street address matched my current residence, but the town was wrong. It was the old town I lived in.
So apparently when the notice of expiration was sent out, it went to the wrong town, *DESPITE* that fact that I had done the conscientiius and responsible thing and changed my address with as *soon* as I moved. Hence, the reason the street address was correct. Somebody screwed up and didn't change the town.
So the cop had my car towed. I didn't have a wrecker company off the top of my head, so he said he would call somebody for me. I asked if I could make a phone call, so I could have somebody pick me up (as I stood on the side of the road out in the cold waiting for him to write me a ticket and for the tow truck to show up) and he told me I could have the tow truck take me and my car home.
Last time I *EVER* trust a cop.
Tow truck showed up, cop took my car keys, gave them to the tow truck driver. Cop gave me a nice $200 ticket for driving unregistered vehicle and not displaying my marker plate properly. Cop leaves.
Tow truck driver asks me if I need a ride or if I have somebody coming.
I told him I would like a ride home please. He tells me no way. Not unless I have *cash* to pay him right there. I told him what the cop said. He said he didn't know anything about that. Either I pay cash, or he takes the car to his shop.
He agrees to take me a couple blocks towards his next stop. He drops me off on a street corner a more than a few *miles* from my home. He gives me a business card with the address of where he is taking my car, and then leaves me there.
Now I am looking at having to pay for the towing, pay for the storage of the car, pay to have the car towed home, and then pay the ticket I got, as well as pay to renew my registration.
And thats to say nothing of how the hell I am getting to work tomorrow with no car.
And the only thing I did wrong was put my plate in the back window.
This night has rocketed up to very high on my list of worst nights of my life.... ever.
Needless to say, Im REALLY f'ing pissed. I have a headache from trying to think my way out of this. If I get proof that I gave the right address, I am SUEING for this.

Re: 1/12/09 a craptastic night
That really sucks. You tried calling the police station and talking to the officer who pulled you over or his boss? That he told you one thing and the tow truck driver does another is wrong. Having worked for a towing company that did police calls, I can say that the driver had no incentive not to take the car to the shop. The company I worked for would charge 50$ a day storage, and on police calls the owner had no problem charging the storage, the tow, and millage, or even putting liens on cars he had for a given amount of time. The best bet is to talk to the cop, try to get him on your side and have him untangle the paperwork.

Oh Geez...
That sucks. I might understand getting a ticket for expired registration (tabs or ownership documentation), but to have the car towed as well boggles my mind.
I don't even know what the rational is for that - perhaps if someone was uninsured, the driver's license was suspended, but for expired registration?!. Expired registration does not equate to any the offenses that I can think of that normally result in having your car towed, and I can't see how towing your car away is justified.
Man, I'm sorry about that.

Tow truck drivers here are merciless. When I worked downtown, I'd see tow truck drivers stalk sidewalks where the street becomes a "No Parking Zone" at particular times (they would actually line up their truck to block the vehicle 1 minute before the daily zone change).
This story made local news even where I'm at....

Re: 1/12/09 a craptastic night
Wow man I feel so bad for you
I got an expired registration ticket 2 years ago, but all I got was the ticket. Maybe because it was only expired by a week or something, but your story is absolutely ridiculous. The cops I've run into have been fairly pleasant too, one of them even joked around with me a little but about how he got a bunch of tickets when he was a kid too.
Good luck with getting your car back...

Re: 1/12/09 a craptastic night
It is not at all uncommon for the cops and the tow truck companies to work together. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the cop got a nice kickback. I know that happens in my current town as well as where I used to live. Can't necessarily blame the tow truck operator, he may not even be in on it. I remember having to pay cash to get one to take my wife's car to our house after a breakdown on the highway. At least then I had my car to go to an ATM on the way.
Best of luck with your car. I've never heard of a tow because of expired registration before. It might be worth checking your state's law and filing a compliant if things don't smell right.
If your story weren't so sad the d m v translation would have been a great laugh.

Re: 1/12/09 a craptastic night
Dave, its a very good community we have here at Aenea ... support is one thing we can all offer to each other... we may not be able to physically or financially help, but we can always offer a shoulder for a fellow player... its good to talk and once in a while it helps to write things out..... I'm not sure, but I bet you felt better after getting that night "out of your system"..... ....
If we can post in this topic how happy we are over events in our real-life (such as my first baby boy), then I'm certain we can lend a shoulder for disasters... ... and writing to an audience (even if its a memo to yourself, for later) is a proven way of venting anger with no physical side effects.... .... ... "in pen and paper, nothing really gets hurt but the wrist of the writer"....
If things are bad now, they can only ever get better, never worse... its a way of looking at life's challenges positively that I try to stick to.....

I know that this is the interwebs and all, but I think that there's people here like myself that do care what's going on with you. Your circumstances sound like a horror show, and even though there might be more bad news, we're routing for you. Only share what you're comfortable with, but don't not share because you think that folks don't care. :-)

Re: 1/12/09 a craptastic night
My main gripe is that I *DID* what I was expected and supposed to do. I changed my adress the day after I moved. I made sure i did it so D M V would send my expiration notice to the correct address so I could have the opportunity to renew the registration and avoid this hassle.
I didnt do anything wrong on that end. I can eat the $90 fine for having my plate in the back window. It sucks, but that was totally on me.
The registration was not under my control and I'm getting majorly shafted for it. The pricetag overall at this point is nearing $600. Thats outrageous.
I want to do bodily harm to the individuals involved, but I know it would just get me arrested.

I have a question for you that's been plaguing me for a while now... Is your name Dave Yeisley or Davey Eisley?
Re: 1/12/09 a craptastic night
Dave Yeisley.
Please dont google search that. There seems to be a depressingly lame person somewhere with my name... and some kids from his school made a website to make fun of him. It is not me. Repeat. Not me.
Thanks...

I feel so......
loved.
Wait, no... thats more like.... closely observed.... or... hunted.
My last name is very rare, I decided to google it one day just to make sure there wasnt anything on the web about me. I found that page and was totally appalled. It wasnt about me, but the fact that the loser from that thing had to happen to have the same exact name as me... I mean... c'mon.... that just sucks.
