June 28: Stealing from Merchants
Some folks may have noticed some testing with Darla...but after the next reset this should go live for many merchants.
PCs with ranks in Pick Pockets may get the option with some merchants to try to steal from them. If you get that option and take it, one of several things may happen:
a) You fail the Pick Pocket skill check. That merchant won't deal with you again (until after the next reset).
b) You fail the check. That merchant, and others in the area, won't deal with you again (until after the next reset).
c) You succeed.
- - - A safe appears in front of you for up to 30 seconds.
- - - You can grab 1 item from the safe (randomly chosen from that merchant's inventory).
- - - As soon as you pick an item, the safe vanishes (and that item may be removed from the merchant's inventory)
- - - If you take too long to pick, the safe vanishes
- - - If someone else tries to take something from "your" heist, the safe vanishes, the item the other person took vanishes, and you get a message saying they messed up your attempted heist.
Not all merchants can be robbed this way, and you generally won't ever be able to steal anything bigger than a longsword. Some merchants are better at spotting thievery attempts. Not all will warn other merchants. Not all other merchants will care if you try to rob their neighbor. Typical DCs will range from about 20-30 (it's random every attempt, not set per merchant...yes, it can be difficult, but merchants are used to keeping an eye out for shoplifters).

Hmmm, intriguing .... perhaps this calls for a new character build!

Until the next reset, there's a minor error, where the safe appears a little ways in front of you instead of right at your location. I noticed in testing this morning with Darla that it showed up on the other side of her and I had to walk around to get to it. This should be fixed for the next planned reset. Other than that, it seems to be working just fine.
