Portals in the Quest Log
Dunno if this has been suggested before, but would it be possible to have the 'You've found a wanderer's portal' journal entries moved to the completed quests bit? I find that they kinda clutter up my active quest log after a while, and it's just sort of psycholgically satisfying to know a journal entry is 'completed'.

Re: Portals in the Quest Log
I'll second this one! Plus, once you've found it, isn't it completed? On a per portal basis, at any rate!

Re: Portals in the Quest Log
And maybe the gems listed? Particularly for one, if I lose my portal code paper, I gotta dig up which birthstone goes to which month, and I can never remember which set of birthstones is being used.

I've said it once and I'll say it again.... the last page of the journal is "yours".. it can be edited by any text editor on your PC as well as in-game... it saves as the player name in your local vault, in your NWN directory..... it can be cut/copy/pasted en mass out-of-game ( I have with mine for all 5 PC's)... you can potentially carry the same information with you regardless who you play as.... It is a tool to be used not ignored....

Re: Portals in the Quest Log
Manny has in the past, as I recall, lost his journal files multiple times. So now he just keeps various stuffs inside a separate text file. Correct?

Re: Portals in the Quest Log
I don't particularly think we need to have the correct gem sequence in the quest log descriptions, personally. I suppose I see it as my PC has to figure out/remember the riddle herself each time she uses the portal, so it makes sense not to have the answers.

Re: Portals in the Quest Log
The other "option" of course uses YOUR gemcutting skills.... say 13 different gems ?... all "etched" with the codes.... pc tool itemdesc xxxcodexxx & pc tool renameitem xxxportalnamexxx .... ... ... of course you'd be doing this multiple times for each PC, and carrying some "Junk items"... but it's another work around if your journal logs do periodically erase themselves.... ..... ...

It can be lost through various means too (installation corruption, accidental deletion, forget to backup files when reinstalling...
After losing 15+ journals even just once, frankly it's a huge pain in the ass to redo each and every one.
Making sure 24 journal notes on 3 separate computers are synced up... I do enough of that kinda work at work.
I've started keeping stuff written on a regular notepad... but even that's a bit of a pain with how much paper work shuffles across my desk in just one day
I don't see either reason as being really against portal codes being kept as a quest journal when you activate their given gates. Easier for the players, player still have to get the right code and activate the gate once...
Player just doesn't have to "redo the puzzle" should he or she lose their notes or the notes are not handy for any reason.

Re: Portals in the Quest Log
Good point ..... I've actually stopped "gathering" the journal entries for portals... I know it's a bit of meta-gaming, but I know where they are, and what the codes are.... and with enough time all my PC's (bar my orc - he's thik) would eventually work them out..... ...
I stopped collecting them because "open quest entries" was really p**sing me off, and I tend to avoid stress when I can (I've got enough going on without my "relaxing pastime" aggravating me too !!)....
How about we could change it/edit it so that they flow more like this ::

How about we could change it/edit it so that they flow more like this ::
- Spoiler:
>> Start the main quest
>> Find the Valley, get the amulet (end of main quest, as it is now)
>> If amulet worn, show arrows and "portal clues" to those that look for them...Can use portal dialers...
>> Acquire clue, journal entry of clue, ((track journal entry number ))
## Gate asks for input on stones..
>> *successful entry*, journal update to true combination/dialogue numbers needed ((journal changed to complete, track completed status))
>> *failed*, Journal update for limbo !!!
>> Ensure Journal is set to "non-retroactive state", thus a completed quest can't be overwritten by a previous quest entry (in case you read the clue again!)...
>> When going to dialler again.....
>> Ask for input on stones for new addresses...
OR
>> Option :: Press sequence from memory...
>> If journal entry completed.. show dialogue stating Name of Portal
## Could include the one your at for a loop explosion!!
>> Select remembered portal address, gate dials "on-autopilot"...
With this we get the quest entries "cleared" when we figure it out, and take away the tedium of manually dialling the gate all the time... the log-in quest-tracking script records what ones the "remembered" portals are...

I agree, RustyDios' suggestion is pretty much the perfect way to do it.

Well... almost zero.... we took the derivative of the function expressing our previous disagreements, so that way the world wouldnt immediately end
Amethyst347 wrote:I agree, RustyDios' suggestion is pretty much the perfect way to do it.
And yes. Rusty's layout is pretty much spot on, and exactly the best way to do it. One issue I see.
I *think* that adding an option to the scritps to auto-dial each portal will force to make a separate script to check those variables for each portal to put that convo option in....which is a module resource concern.
I would be happy with being able to use the select tool on the console, type in a vc command for one of the portals I have successfully travelled to via the portal system, and then when clicking the console to activate it, have the script verify that I know that portal, and auto-dial it for me (provided, as usual, I have the proper 'key' item equipped).
If I have not successfully used the combination of the portal I set with the vc command, then the conversation would fire as normal. If I wish to utilize a new combination for the first time (one that hasnt been saved as a completed quest and successfully used portal code), then I can use the select tool and VC command to clear any preset portal I had... so that the console conversation will fire as normal.

Re: Portals in the Quest Log
Personally I don't mind hitting each gem manually. It can suck when I click the one by accident... but then it also sucks when I roll a 1 on a save, but it's still fun rushing to get through the portal before the creatures around it respawn The chance of failure makes it interresting

Re: Portals in the Quest Log
I think if you find a way to use the portal, such a going to Icereach, and successfully put in the icereach code, maybe the journal can have the Portal quest for Icereach portal completed, giving the character the proper information in addition to what they have previously acquired, since the PC has now learned and used the Icereach portal properly. Same for the others obviously.
