Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
Lots and lots of potential for an idea like this. I am merely going to scratch the surface in this post.
The idea being, some established PCs have earned more than enough gold that, if they pooled their resources, they could easily afford to build and fund an insitution right in the Vale that caters to preparing and supplying fledgeling adventurers.
This place could even become the default entry point after the astral conjunction. Move the signs, notices, etc inside the academy. With the astronomical sums that the PCs have to spend, they could easily afford to purchase the Sleeping Dragon Inn itself, and build the academy around the Inn, using it as a "common room".
Bookshelves with tomes full of useful information about the land and its challenges (perhaps even some of the useful hints and info posts from these forums). History and background flavor to go along with it.
A vendor who is so thoroughly subsidized by the Academy benefactors, that he sells heavily discounted (like 10gp or less each) potions of useful buffing spells, but only to folks who are 7th level or below. This would be a way for lowbies to get their hands on decent quantities of cure serious/critical, mage armor, ghostly visage, improved invisibility, haste, Bull strength, cats grace, bears endurance, foxs cunning, owls wisdom, eagles splendor, liquid courage, protection from evil/good, freedom of movement, and stoneskin without blowing all their starting money. After they hit level 8, however, they no longer qualify for this charity, but it would ease the struggle of having to cope with sometimes extremely unforgiving spawns at low levels for PCs who are not power-built otimized Combat-Monsters.
Crideas would *gladly* spend millions upon millions of gold pieces and months of his time helping to get such a project off the ground, and would even supply the funds, scrolls, or potions on a recurring basis. I am sure there are others who would pitch in, too. This would be a fantastic way for such PCs to "give back" to the rest of the adventuring community in a long lasting, make-a-legacy sort of way

Re: Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
Brilliant idea; I love it! The only potential issue I could foresee would be an over-abundance of the player base wanting to participate and having the town turn into Valorian's Keep. Not that I'm against this, mind you (I actually think it would be pretty cool to have a player-generated keep), but it would constitute a reasonably major change to an iconic part of the game world, and I could see if wasn't 100% down with that.

But the vale is already an area where hundreds of PCs move through on a regular basis ... why not maximize their time there? And I couldn't agree more with dave that we need something to better take care of low-level characters - this idea has great, great potential!

Before that whole mess with Talon, there was a militia barracks in the vale, with some soldiers, a dalix altar, ect....
Rebuild that, and use it as the place for this suggestion.

The Dalix area of Moutainholm could be utilized, and it is need of some renovation anyway. Always wondered what was there in the back if one did not have some minor teleporting magics....

Re: Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
Another idea to go along with this ... what if your PC has lots of cash and desires a place, but you don't want to make a home ... how about adventurers' quarters? Sorta like prefab apartments for the PC who wants to keep her homebase in the Vale ... a wing, if you will ...
(I must say, I think there is a tremendous amount of potential PC interactivity and immersitivity with this Academy idea ...)

Re: Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
I was thinking of maybe a PC who can personally contribute something like 20 million gold. Thats a totally arbitrary number, yes. The idea being that the PC would need to have an astronomical amount of gold to piss away on this project. Crideas could do it twice over, and Alastair probably three or four times over. And I am sure there are others.
Its a long term goal for a PC, and setting the bar pretty high would make it more meaningful when a PC achieves it.... and they could have their name and class/title/reputation added to a placard in the academy somewhere.

Re: Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
Another idea for this...
A placeable container in the academy of some sort for "donated gear".
It could randomly spawn on its own a few items that are worth a couple hundred gold, similar to the certain bookshelves work.
It would also allow for PCs to drop items in with a value not to exceed a certain cap, say like 500gp.
Each PC could have a donation quota, so they cannot donate more than a certain GP value per reset, and each donation could be done from anywhere in Aenea using a VC command. there would need to be some sort of magic on the container and the PC would need to be attuned somehow in order to explain this, of course.
PCs of lower than level 6 would each have a quota of how much gp value they can "withdraw" from the donation container per reset, as well. Above level 6, access would be denied.
Of course the specific numbers for quotas, caps, and level restrictions could be tweaked, but i think the genral idea is sound if we end up getting an Academy.

Wouldn't it be cool to have the starting point for PCs be in the lobby of the Adventurer's Academy until they hit 6 level or so, then they go to the Inn or wherever (especially if there's some sort of binding system in place) ...

It only stands to reason that after years of accidental planar travelers appearing at the planar rift marked by the Dragon statue that the Inn was built on top of, that the community would give the beleaguered Innkeeper lady some help with the continual newcomers!

Re: Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
Looking at implementing some of these ideas. May take a few days to get minor systems mapped out (for handling PC donations for building and subsidizing merchant(s), PC donation of items to a single location from abroad, etc.).
Books: Send some emails with the desired titles and text.
Default start location in "academy": No, but I'd add a bind point inside.
Location: Maybe something built just to the south of the Vale proper, perhaps the entrance on the southern side of the Leaf Market. There's some forest there that could be cleared for a large building, and would still encourage folks to buy from resident shops (Smitty's, The Iron Tortoise, the Temple of Life, etc.).

Re: Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
It appears that the Firehair clan of dwarven builders has cleared a small path and clearing into the forest through the south side of the Leaf Market. They seem to be waiting on getting paid before doing anymore work though.
Now taking in-game donations toward the building of a proper grand mansion to house the Adventurer's Society Academy.

Re: Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
Soooo .... how do we make the donations? Talk to the Firehair Clan? Do they have a convo mechanism in place that will collect donations?

Re: Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
Soooo ... are you keeping track of the donated amount, ? What's the cap when you say 'we've reached our goal?' And can we have some kind of running total, like, say, a donation marker on the front page of the forums, kinda like the local fire department uses a thermometer graphic to represent the total sum, and the (usually red) mercury to represent the money earned? Or possibly just a splash amount, like "Gold donations to date:" or "So far we've raised:"? That kind of feedback can be useful, as we know how much we need to raise and can work harder towards fulfilling that goal.
What say ye?
What say ye?

Re: Used: PCs pooling resources to fund an "Adventurer's Academy"
Wow. Just check the donations amount (I am tracking it in the server log). Let's just say that there's plenty in there to get the dwarves to not only get started on The Adventurer's Society Academy, but to build the entire mansion.
I was going for 15 million for a total for building. You guys have donated 19 million. Definitely enough to build the place and stock it with essentials for the less experienced adventurers that will find it a place to get ready to head out.
Now, for those that want to contribute things like lore of the lands (in book form), feel free to write up the text/descriptions and email them to me or send them in a PM. I'll copy them to books in the academy once it's built so that others may read their fill.

Awesome...
... ... I sent some "Dragon Books" to you a while ago that I think might be fitting for here, I don't know if you got them or not?... at any rate I don't recall seeing them in the world at all, yet....
What types of things are you after for the "lore".... places to go? tips on classes/subclasses?... best places to find certain items?... general help with some of the "FAQ" ?.... Previous historical events (DM events that have been partook in) ?
