New Router Coming Soon

Have started having regular wired connection issues unrelated to my ISP, so I'm replacing the router with a brand new one.  Same brand as before (Linksys), which has been reliably running 24/7 for more than 6 years (up until the last couple weeks).

Should only take a few days for Amazon to deliver.  They say 5-8 business days, but it often takes only 2 for me...having a local Amazon shipping warehouse means things get here fast.

Woo hoo.... gets a birthday present (new router) and Aenea (and the players) gets to enjoy it too - that is dedication !

New router has arrived.  I'm currently writing down all the various settings I have on the old one (like port forwarding and such so y'all can actually play on the server when I'm done).  After that, I'll install the new one, configure it, then post here again to let everyone know the game is back online.

Installed and running.  New router meant refreshed connection to the ISP though, so we've also got a new direct connect IP: 68.2.68.147:5121

Q: What is a router? I had thought previously that it was the device that switched printers, and realized that this has not been the case for some time now. But since this is current news, I thought I would share my ignorance and ask....

It's the equipment that takes your internet/network signal and directs/routes it to different devices. I'm sure tech-oriented folks could offer a better, more in-depth explanation/description, but that's how I always see it.

Mine (a Linksys WRT54G) didn't cause problems either until recently, Elhanan.  But after being on 24/7 for more than 6 years it started to cut off the internet connection at random times (but still let all the devices in my home communicate).

I'm liking the Cisco/Linksys brand of routers. New one is a Linksys WRT54GL.

I got the new one in late last night and eventually got it configured so that the server (on a wired connection) and everything else in the house (2 laptops, 1 Wii, and 2 smartphones, all wireless connections) could connect to the internet again.

heh! I have not ever seen one of those on any of my past systems; am guessing they are not required for Players.

A router is the traffic cop between various chunks of the Internet. There are maybe 10 of them between you and Aenea. The last one before Aenea is on 's bookshelf. If you tell us how you connect to the internet we can guess where the closest one to you is

hehe...not on a shelf at all.

Can't keep anything of value on a bookshelf in this house.  10, 7, and 3 (and 3) year olds' curiosity means anything I want to keep for a while has to be hidden out of sight.

My house is a split-level, with a landing by the front door and stairs leading both down and up.  The router (and cable modem) sit on a cool cement floor under that landing (hidden away from children's fingers).  The server is on a shelf in a closed closet under the stairs leading up...nice and cool, and with an ethernet cable running right to the router.

heh! I seem to recall that when the twins were little, they disconnected some things under your desk.

On a sim note, a friendly co-worker returned to find that his dog had chewed thru his T-1 wiring, and had pulled some from inside the wall. My friend now owns a cat....

I'm not sure if "the beast" is still used for the Aenea server (I'm sure Aenea has it's own dedicated server machine now) however... this forum page contains some info and images of that machine which sat in (old) house... ... and for some reason I really fancied digging up/ into an old thread...

Man; 2010! At this age, time speeds along, and I do not even have the paycheck to mark it any longer. Is this system also in need of an upgrade? Mine had to be replaced due to all the disconnects and weekly BSoD's.

Unfortunately, last winter reliable old Beast went into into a coma and failed to recover.

I think the motherboard finally wore out.  I still have the machine sitting downstairs, it just fails to do anything when it's powered up (doesn't run the display or the hard drive).  Maybe for nostalgia, when I've got time and spare money, I'll try to locate a motherboard that will work the ten year old machine.

I don't know what the specs on that system were, but I was just about to toss the bare bones of an old 500Mhz Pentium III system that used PC100 memory and had at least a UDMA/66 IDE hard drive controller. Installed Debian Linux last spring, so I know it was working. If you want the motherboard & CPU, I can pull it and ship it to you as a donation to the Aenea Historical Preservation Society.
