Suggestion: Library of Learning
Ok, Amethyst, I was thinking. Wouldn't it be cool if...
A new NPC comes to town, anytown, a monk/scholar type. She's looking to establish a great library of learning, one that will be respected continent-wide. But she needs specific books (or a specific series of books) to boost her core offerings. But these books are in far-away dangerous lands, in dungeons and sorcerer's towers and rival temples and the like. Of course, she needs brave adventurers to suffer these perils and bring the books back to her. Opportunities for quests and rewards galore!
As a sub-note, the library could offer a permanent bonus to PCs (+1 INT, for example) if they read x-amount of books. Instead of following the traditional book model, the books could "use special power self onac" (or whatever) and launch a conversation which the PC would have to fully engage in order to get "credit" for reading the book. "Credit" can be kept in the form of integers, like "bookread_01" or something similar. Once the PC completes "reading" so many books, the intelligence (or wisdom [or whatever, depending on the course of study]) stat is raised.
Sounds cool, eh? Just a thought...

Re: Suggestion: Library of Learning
yeah this sounds really cool.. as Jay just learned about five languages in as many minutes.. jonny5 style.. woomth language learned.. next please.. more input.. input..
.. An intellegence based check to actually start reading the book..
.. the last dialogue options involving mini tests to see if you read it or just clicked on through..
.. book descriptions could be a kinda back page summary style thing.. few hints..
.. turn "read" books into a stackable base item.. I've read this many books so I must be getting smarter, wiser, etc.. and thus can go to " THE library" and prove my worth for Int+, Wis+ etc
a downside then is each book like this actually needs a conversation and/ or scripting.. thats alot more work..
.. my two cents on the subject..

Re: Suggestion: Library of Learning
I am really liking this idea, even as a quest... though the stat boosts are probably unneeded with the tomes floating around.... However.. perhaps award the player with a single +3 tome of their choice to compensate for their rarity?

Re: Suggestion: Library of Learning
As a dead post necromancer playing a lore hound I've resurrected this thread to ask if anything like this was ever implemented? A rare book quest?
Some interesting book things I've seen in my NWN travels:
- Bookcases that have books but you can't take them
- If NPCs are in the same room as bookcases, you need to wait till they wander out of sight before you try to take one. Trying to steal a book triggers them calling for GUARDS This could also be something to destroy reputation or make you infamous
- A conversation on bookcase and you could speak a word and if the subject was in the library it would bring up some information. If a book existed on the subject it told you the title to look out for in your travels.
- A bookcase that rolled Search (Or in the case of Aenea it could even be GATHER INFORMATION) and if you found something interesting a book would appear in the shelf inventory. If not, you could not try again until reset. For this world, 'Once per day' seems like a good fit.
- Lore or KNOWLEDGE rolls. This could be on anything, Scribblings (as we already see), pillars, statues, or even invisible areas painted on the floor.
It rolls LORE or perhaps the appropriate KNOWLEDGE and if successful you get a blurb of floaty text on why the thing is significant. You also get a small amount of XP (Depending on how hard the DC is). this also is something that could only be done once per reset. I've seen this implemented also in hard-to-get-to or far, out-of-the-way places as a reward for people going to the farthest ends of a server.

Re: Suggestion: Library of Learning
There's a small library in the adventurer's academy behind the leaf market.
However most of the books were on only on the enchant and tradeskill systems, and are out of date now. I just havent had a chance to make up the new ones to send in to .
