Weapon change in library

This is a strange bug, that I remembered because of Svair's post.

When my ranger/rogue was in the Library, there's a corner in the main book room that the entrance to seems sort of secret, because it's not a regular door and it kept appearing/opening and closing while my toon was there, with a portal vfx. So, I walked into it, and did not transit any portal but walked through that vfx into the space behind it. It was dark and did not become not highlighted when I went in there, like it was an illegal area, and probably the room itself behind the portal is not supposed to be walked into. But I was curious, so I equipped a flaming Staff (the special one) and walked back in. Well, that did illuminate the area, which I found to be an odd occurrence of the ceilings not disappearing so I had to get down at char eye level to see the space.

But the oddest thing is that the weapon that I was holding changed. It rewrote itself from a Blazing Staff to a Blazing Club, with a corresponding change in appearance, label, portrait, and description. It stayed that way for a long while, at least until the next reset (if not longer, I don't really know). I realize that the base item of this Staff is actually a Club, so it was interesting how it rewrote itself back to its base appearance, apparently because of the area I'd walked my toon into.

It's back now to the way it was, a Blazing Staff, but I thought I'd mention this strange happening.

Was said Library the one in Dawnholm by chance?

Yes, I thought so. Not a problem, the only problem was why the weapon changed.

Is that the blazing staff (quarterstaff) that changes attributes as you level?

If so, I had that in the bank and went to check it out and verify what changed with 5 levels since I last used it... poof... it was a 1H club instead of 2H staff. Everything else seems to be the same but its now and continues to be a club.

I'm not sure that meant that that base change happened in the last week. Because I'm pretty sure that it's been a club base for at least many months, as a while back I was curious whether two of these could be dual-wielded, so I did check what the base weapon behavior was to clue me in before I went to obtain another.

In any case, that doesn't explain why my Blazing Staff was changed merely by walking into an illegal area, and is now back to its previous appearance again.

Ah, might have misunderstood your post then. Have you tried to duplicate the bug?

(I tried too, but couldn't get it to do as you described. But may have done it wrongly.)

It's not a very important bug, because how many who are not the appropriate class are going to try to walk into that. (It's just a roguish thing to try every door and portal, lol.) Although I was surprised that it didn't have better unwalkableness, or a message, like you said, for those not suitable to its purpose. And I thought maybe might want to address that situation.

Since the consequences were fairly harmless, I may try duplicating it sometime again when I get the opportunity.

Really, mostly it just made me curious how an area could revert a weapon to its base item.

That particular secret door (to the portal) should no longer open to anyone without the Epic Magic feat (with at least one use remaining).

I am willing to wager the weapon swap-out was not related to what area the PC was in. Much more likely that some other event triggered it, even if the event was not obvious to the player. I could be wrong, but I would be shocked.

I think you're right, Dave. I could have sworn that the club reverted back to a staff after the restart, but today I took a look and it was a club appearance.

And when I equipped the other one that was still showing as a Blazing Staff, it also did the pop out of my hands (as if as a staff it was no longer dual-wieldable) and then I saw in the combat log, Item Appearance Updating, Acquired Club, and it also became a Blazing Stick.

So, I maybe was confuzeled, and am sorry, forget whatever I've said. I must have equipped that weapon for the first time since it had been changed, and that's what did it.
