Build a Vocabulary (Orc/Orcish Language)
So...feel like helping your friendly neighborhood dragon add a little more depth to the game?
I'm working on expanding my list of words/phrases for the Aenean orcish language. This is for adding depth to items/areas/creatures in the game, rather than creating an actual language, so most syntax rules can be ignored. I'm looking for words that would fit as nouns, verbs, or adjectives, and I'm not looking to re-use some other existing (real or imaginary) language.
Orcish is a rough-sounding, harsh language. Think of orcish society kind of like an evil, chaotic version of Klingon society (in Star Trek), but without any of that time wasted worrying about honor. Most words or phrases are 1 to 3 syllables. Keep in mind that orcs in Aenea are just as intelligent as humans...they're just more evil and are a warrior/strength-centered culture that looks down on physical weakness.
Hmmm...maybe I need to listen closer to the orcish soundsets in the toolset...
Here's what I've got so far, and I'll edit this list as anyone adds things.
k'nort = empire (pronounced "kah nort")
k'rath = city (pronounced "kah wrath")

Ok, the ones I started with are taken, but that's because I'm already using those in one way or another in the game.

Re: Build a Vocabulary (Orc/Orcish Language)
Sword - Kavchak
I used it already as a name for my beastial Orc's weapon of choice... his "Kavchak Scrar" (Sword of Blood)
Ogrul - Crush (pronounced "Ohg grool"
Shakah - Kill (Pronounced with a hard 'sh', almost to sounding like "chaka")
"Ogrul Shaka Kah" - 'crush and kill" "kah" as orcish derogatory word for the weaker "child" races.... fits with that one phrase orcs yellin battle that sounds like "Old school chaka khan!"

Re: Build a Vocabulary (Orc/Orcish Language)
Turns out a DM can possess different orcs and get them to say their battlecry, which ends up also adding text to the chat window. Here are the four different orcish battlecries I found.
"Bozku tanshaka KALL!"
"Dal na kor..."
"Get zu! Get ZALKA!!"
"Ibgo dang...gojiga!"
Orcs is funny.

Re: Build a Vocabulary (Orc/Orcish Language)
"pooka"...just doesn't sound right coming from a tough orc. Sounds like a teddy bear, or a little "boo-boo".
"zug zug"...sounds ok, but I shortened it to one "zug" so it doesn't sound like an Ewok's "zub zub".
Glad some folks seem to be enjoying their first encounters with a ferk grumbok.

A year and a half since we started on this post, and we've got some new players since then. Maybe y'all'd like to contribute?
Um...Orc Bump!
Oh, and I'm working on building a new area with a spot called Cho Lynul Scro. Look at that, a use for some of this stuff.

Re: Build a Vocabulary (Orc/Orcish Language)
or Cave of Black Bones. The orcs don't really care, it's a deep hole or tunnel into the ground, and they like names that remind them of things they've killed, or things that sound strong. (blood, bones, skulls, iron, fist, etc.)RustyDios wrote:The Amethyst Dragon wrote: Cho Lynul Scro.

Hm, maybe this could be a help? [Clicky]
It's a language converter which has. . .pretty much all the languages Aenea has, I think. Could be used to build up a proper vocabulary...

Re: Build a Vocabulary (Orc/Orcish Language)
Ye know I just spent two hours trying to find this thread to translate "K'Goth Lynul Roth" .... sheesh!.... I should have gone to bed ... ... ... ...
Can this be stickified or added into the websites Athenaeum ?
Or have the words, Orc Language/Orcish in the title so the stupid search box can do it's job correctly ... ...
The translation reads " Castle Black Skull" ...

Re: Build a Vocabulary (Orc/Orcish Language)
Working on adding a few more words, then I'll whip up a little webpage for the main site that has two lists (common > orc & orc > common) that has the terms in alphabetical order for easier translation.
