Moldy Books...
We've all seen those moldy books some ten thousand times over...wouldn't it be cool if they did this? What say ye?

Heh, I knew right when I saw the thread title that it would be a suggestion to have moldy books disease us dead or something.
Evil.

Re: Moldy Books...
I think it (the mold package, not necessarily teh moldy books) would be awesome, because it would add an extra dimension to the playing - I don't know about y'all, but many times my PnP PCs were done in because they stepped in something they shouldn't have! This sort of environmental threat, if you will, helps reflect that big monsters with big weapons aren't the only dangers that an adventurer faces - sometimes the terrain can be more unforgiving than the denziens who live on it...

Yellow mold was a feature of the first module I played after the switch to 3.0 and I've been a fan of throwing environmental hazards at PCs ever since; I dig it

Re: Moldy Books...
Yeah, sounds good. Possible 3-18 CON dmg on two failed saves, the DCs arent too crazy (which is good cuz CON dmg is NASTY as hell).
I *especially* like the non-glowing placeable getting replaced by a glowing one if the PC succeeds on a search/sport check to notice it.
It would also allow for an item of some sort, like a solvent/detergent, to "clean" the mold or render it harmless/inert. That way you dont need magic to deal with it.

Re: Moldy Books...
I would prefer to only have a small chance of finding such tomes, as there appears to be an abundance of such books, and yellow mold can be devestating especially when encountered at lower lvls. As I recall, fire sources cause such mold to increase in size and damage, and many such tomes are surrounded by torches.

Re: Moldy Books...
If curse removal undid it, I'd go for it. Otherwise, it could make for an extremely unenjoyable time for a player who gets zapped with it.

I was thinking of Explosive Runes, esp when combined with Yellow Mold also in the room.

Re: Moldy Books...
I blame Eric for getting me into this evil mindset... Please don't kick me out of the Players Union .... We should all tip Eric into the Darkside Masters Union ... oh.. wait .... he's already a member of the DM Union .... ...
I'd say if the idea of cursed tomes ever was inducted.. .. remove curse (or possibly an NPC cleric) should be able to undo it ... the problem comes when someone uses a tome - They should get bright glaring warnings, before being booted and after logging in, a permanent widget for a reminder, and some kind of chance to spot the book BEFORE it even gets used (maybe something completely different in the description ~ that after a while people forget to read (once they've seen an item hundreds of times)) .... ...
The only other thing I can think of is it would effect what people would be able to do on level up (god forbid a re-level-up), might possibly effect reincarnation/ascention, and I have no idea what permanently lowering a score has on the effect of something already taken (such as a feat) .... ... ...

Re: Moldy Books...
I honestly don't like the idea of cursed books giving permanent letoscript stat reductions. At all.
Make it a temporary effect, sure.

Re: Moldy Books...
Yeah it possibly be too much hassle anyway.. I can see someone getting majorly messed up somewhere .... but a temporary curse effect (or similar to what cused stones/items do already ~ swap out for a "Tome of the Library": weight 300lbs... )
... (and just to get the thread back on track ) ..... ... Still think the OP of moldy yellow mold books is awesome though ... ...
