I remember that book!
But more importantly, I now once again know the name of the author of a book I've looked for for years (but couldn't remember the auther/title). Turns out it was John Steakley's Armor. That's awesome :-)

Armor!
That book was AMAZING. I actually PM'd Grundail about it cuz he had it listed on his website, and I remember loving that book so much.
My favorite quote:
"You are what you do when it matters most."
Felix is one of my heroes.

Re: Some good reading
Wow grundail, what a great resource! And if it were not for Eric Flint, James H. Schmitz would certainly have had a harder time getting into the limelight. The Telzey books are a family favorite Thanks!

Re: Some good reading
I just bought a heavy book (at Sam's Club), since 99% of the things in it looked worthy of my attention.
Re: Some good reading
Ha! The local library finally delivered Armor for me.
I picked up this book at the same time: The Elfish Gene. I don't know what to think of it yet.

Sadly it looks like a dude who grew out of fantasy/gaming, apologizing for his "nerd obsession" and all the time "wasted" in it, and attempting to show others (be they gamers or non-gamers) all the factors that contribute to such a proclivity being forgiveable but something that should be outgrown before adulthood. I hope I'm just seeing a harsher message than he is trying to convey....

Re: Some good reading
Dave, I missed this post previously, but yeah: having reading more, I don't recommend the book.
It's funny, it took till the last chapter before the author states that DnD wasn't the root cause for his youthful awkwardness, but by that time the previous chapters have already drilled into the reader's head that DnD was in fact why he didn't meet girls, do well in school, socialize better with others, etc...
I wanted to identify with the author better as there are few who had such a difficult time with DnD as I when growing up. My books were burned during the 80's DnD backlash, I couldn't own graph paper for my math class for fear I would plot a dungeon, and even my library record was frequently examined to make sure that nothing to 'fantasy' like was being checked out*. And not only DnD was submitted to the fire of the furnace, but my Lone Wolf books, my Iron Crown substitutes, and anything with Steve Jackson's name on it were committed to the flame. Seriously, there where some people madly against DnD during that time, and unfortunately my folks bought into it**.
But yeah... the author identifies DnD and his time with it, without qualification except for 2 sentences, as a waste of youth and time. Too bad, I feel sympathy for him. My youth, DnD included, was a heck of a good time.
* Not entirely bad. I was forced to explore some pretty good Sci-Fi during that time, but still managed to discover Fritz Leiber and Michael Moorcock during those barren years.
** But later apologized...

Re: Some good reading
Thanks for posting that link, Grundail! They offer Mobi format, which gives me access. I'm one of those nuts who reads books on a cell phone, in my case a Blackjack II with a decent screen. When I can't sleep late at night I can get into a book on the phone, and thus avoid turning on a light that will wake the wife. I've just about exhausted the local library's online offerings of Mobibooks, so this is a great new resource.

Finished Vampire$.
Overall, phenomenal book. Had a couple moments in it where I was mad at John... but those moments were still good plot. I definitely recommend the book.
