Vampires and death magic? Empty Vampires and death magic?

Are vampires immune to death magic?

I'm asking because while hunting beholders with my vamp paladin, I'll get the "You are immune to the beholder's death ray" messages, but if I roll a 1 vs them, I'm apparently not immune to death rays (the message log reports I was killed by a death ray, not a disintigration ray).

Which one of the messages is in error?

Gabe has had the same problem. Vamp PCs are not immune to death magic as a feature of their race, at least not in my experience.

Of course, once Gabe ascended... problem solved.

It was surviving to get to ascension that was tricky.
