Used: Suggestion for New Players Install-Download Instructions

Hello!

I finally made it into your PW, after two days of messing with collecting all the many files (and updates to files, and updates to updates, etc) necessary. Having fun so far, but let me tell you, I have suggestions for the download install page for new players.

There's an issue, that if a new player doesn't have the right CEP files, your new character will be created but one just won't have the choices of presumably CEP heads and whatever other CEP is involved in creating a new character. It happened to me, I was hoping for a nice new CEP head, but I didn't get the choices, and didn't realize what the issue was until the character was already created and then the game booted me with a message that I didn't have the right CEP files to proceed into the game. Seems the required CEP files are CEP 2.4, not CEP 2.3 as the Install page indicated! So I got the CEP 2.4 and sure enough, the files mentioned were in it, so I put it into my game. But when I went back to log in, I found my character already created, so now I'm stuck with an old face. But I might just call it good, hope nothing else got broke in my character creation because of that. So the suggestion would be to put in the link to the proper CEP file. And it would be helpful to give lists of the files necessary, to verify that where you've linked to get them is actually giving you the right ones, and even where they go, for those not so familiar with where to plug in files, and if 'erf' and other various files are necessary for mere players. Just tracking down the right install instructions doc for the CEP was an issue in itself. It may seem strange, but I've played for many years on a PW where CEP was not part of it, so it was a bit new for me. And as I said, I got it mucked up the first time out the gate and ended up with an old head.

Also, it might be a good idea to put in a list of explicit steps for what is absolutely required to start the game, rather than the way the Downloads-Install page is right now, where it seems like under Required is Choose Method 1 OR Method 2, but it's really do both. I originally thought the Aenea updater was optional, thinking that the files posted under Method 1 would be the latest, but when I did do the updater, it updated a lot.

So, I muddled through it, but there's a lot of files to find, download, writeover updated files, arrange, and update again for your PW, so I'd suggest some more explicit directions for new players. Otherwise you might get potential joiners turned off by the sheer amount of effort and time required to get it working right.

The step by step install guide post has now been updated (with new info, new CEP links, and new link to critical rebuilt patches). Thanks for the reminder.

CEP, being a hak package, will not load into the game before or during character creation. This means that without extracting the head models and putting them into your override folder, they don't become available before actually entering the game (after NWN character creation). Most of the heads are available in-game, and there is a magical shop in the city of Macedone (called Shada's Alterations) where you can pick a new head model.

For downloading the Aenea-specific files, there really are two methods, either one of which will work.

The download from the Vault entry (a PLAYERPACK file and possibly the updates .hak file and updated .tlk file) is one method. The other method is using WorldGate. Either method will get you all of the needed files.

WorldGate: If you run it after downloading the PLAYERPACK files (plus the update file(s)), it will likely re-download many of the files that you already have, especially if you haven't run it before (since it has to check against all of the files (and parts of those files) available, then stores a record of it on your computer after the download has happened). I'll put a note to this effect in the install guide.

Oh, lovely! So I didn't totally mess up my character creation and miss out on a new head, and I can pick one up. I remember one a while back in the CEP that I liked a lot, maybe it's still around.

So, enjoying the PW so far, thanks for the welcome. Nice that there are a goodly number of scripted quests to get going. The only issue I could use a clue with presently is where to find heal potions, I've gone around to a lot of merchants and can't seem to find the essential things!

From the starting inn, head out the door.. turn ..erm.. right.. follow the road across the bridge.. turn erm.. right...... follow to the collection of four pillars on the little raised platform (this is a temple of Asis) ... notice the symbol on the floor?
.. that four-point star is the holy symbol of Asis, goddess of life... your'll find one of her priests (Antonis) nearby and he'll have the healing potions you so desire ... ...


.... Directions might be a bit ..erm.. off.. it's been over a week since I managed to log in and I'm posting this from memory... ...


If you're in dire need you can also find several shops that sell "healing kits" (note: they do not look like "normal nwn" kits) and you can trade with other players if you ask (not to mention clerics/druids and paladins, which will likely heal you for nothing... )

Thanks so much! I think I know the Healer, I think he's the one who sent me to find some ingredients for a potion to heal some farmer's wife. I must have missed his store somehow. Lovely lovely! *dives back into the game*

And here in the Vale, this lass can be seen offering wares in the local graveyard; safest to visit during daylight hours, if possible.
