Crafting Impaler Empty Crafting Impaler

I believe I have read the other threads related to this topic. I am trying to change the appearance of Impaler using the boots in Bluebeard's tower in the Vale. I know I need a base skill of 8, in fact I have a base skill of 19, and a modified skill of 20.

I change the weapon appearance to match my own, then modify the weapon appearance. The dialog option says to copy it to my own weapon will cost 750 gold and has a dc of 20. When I select the option, it says something along the lines of "Something prevents you from doing that."

Any guidance?

There are some items that just can't have their appearance modified.
