It doesn't seem to be too much from my experience. I've tried using them in all levels of damage (from barely wounded to near death). Given their rarity and the effectiveness of the plentiful asis potions (cure X line and full heals), I don't bother with spark of life potions.

I think if I remember correctly using a Spark of Life potion whilst under the condition of "wounded" allows your saves to both be 100... you know when the combat log is scrolling out stabilization rolls d100... ... ...
