Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
There will soon be a change to the PvP toggle in the game.
Currently, you can set the toggle via the VC system (option pvp), as long as you are not in combat.
After the change, you will not be able to change the toggle yourself. It will be changed to PvP Willing when you enter the Bloodsand Pit (the arena for PvP combat I'll be adding). It will be changed back when you leave the arena via the exits or via death.

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
So only PvP in one area? I can dig that ...

So, after the change, my characters who are pvp-ok'ed will be automatically switched to no-pvp?

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
Yes. Aenea was never meant to be a PvP server, and this way the battles will be limited to one area AND others can safely watch.
The Bloodsand Pit will be a no teleporting zone (so no jumping out of the pit to fire spells/arrows in), "interior" (so vampires, drow, and shadow children can fight at any time), and PCs in the "spectator" areas will get immunity to all spells (so they won't have to worry about getting killed by stray area spells while enjoying the show).
And yes, the PvP flag will automatically change to Non-PvP upon entering the game after this change.

Sure, you'll still be able to, just not actually attacking.MannyJabrielle wrote:Darn, so Angelica can't abuse Juster anymore? That's no fun
Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
Serious question, AoE's.... is the server going party protected? And if so, will that include quaking chorus? Currently if Alastair hunts with anybody, QC nukes allies as well as enemies.

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
Just some thoughts:
-The original OC had an arena area as well. Characters came in de-buffed (no active spells/effects/etc...).
Will it be the same that? Will there be options as to how to start?
-I see different types of characters having significant advantages either way. If there are no buffs at the beginning, characters like Phillick might get an early upper hand vs spellcasters (just rushing in and start whacking, disrupting spell-casting due to AoOs). Of course, this might be hurbris on my part, maybe they'll still mop the floor with him.
-On the other had, a buffed caster is a terrible thing to behold, and some straight melee'rs (like Phillick) have little chance once they're wound up.
-Any terrain obstacles to characters can move behind to block LOS (for those roguish types)?
-What about potions of Aesis? Will there be limited uses? Some of us can fill a small lake with the number of these potions we carry.
-It looks like bystanders will be protected from the combatant's spells, etc...with the combatant being immunized from the bystander's spells (no buffs/attack spells)?

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
If we cant set the toggle for PvP willing .. how are we going to know who might want to fight in the Aenea Arena Area..?? Will it be a case of turn up and wait?.. Send a shout ? ..
Will there be any changes to unintentional PvP death via AoE ( Hence not-willing + not-willing = death to both .... ) ... etc...
And btw .. Ace we get an Aenean Arena Area to fight in.. even with no willing PvP around it sounds like a good spot for some DM led "uber-fights".. or a What would you do if ? (an ancient red + a demi-lich + Necronius + Elder Beholder + Greyskull + a few orc rav..etc.. ) all popped around you at once...
((likely answer being : die)) .... lol.....

So what will happen should we nuke/get nuked by someone's AoE? I'm not seeing how it would work if we're set to not attack others, yet our AoEs will still fry us. I have no problem with either pvp enabled or pvp-disabled, but it should be absolute. The penalties listed on the one board in the sleeping dragon in look pretty hefty, and is the primary reason why put my PC's toggle to enabled. Someone nukes me with an AoE, they usually feel bad as is, and accidents happen, but I don't want them taking any penalty XP wise on top of it.

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
I'm still fiddling with settings and such on this, and further details will be posted here as I finalize things.
Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
I'm curious what prompted this change? I understand that Aenea isn't primarily a PvP server, but I think being able to battle out in the world adds an element of realism to the roleplaying.
Are you having problems with people getting killed or griefed recently? I personally like the feature being enabled
Maybe if you're going to make the arena you could make an item that everyone receives for free that teleports them to the arena (which can't be used in combat and the arena is a rest free zone to avoid people escaping death). They can play out the battle in there and then click on a pillar or something that teleports them back to their original location?

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
The change is now live.
sevenar, I just saw your post.
I just wanted to assure that nobody would stumble into the middle of a PvP fight and get smeared in the process. PvP is definitely not a regular part of the Aenea experience, so I put the arena in an out of the way place with triggers set up to keep observers safe while they can still enjoy the show.
I've made the entire server (except for the town of Sunglory, in the Calithian Empire) non-PvP and eliminated the normal PvP coding that penalized players for killing each other if one of them was unwilling (since, by going into the Bloodsand Pit, you're basically agreeing to possibly fight to the death).
With the addition of a basic way to keep track of bets (see game help in the VC system), players can easily bet on the outcome.
When fighting in the arena, the game will also keep track of wins and losses, the totals of which you can now access with info arena.
I don't currently have a way for players to teleport to Sunglory, but it's a definite possibility.

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
Ok, just checked and the arena area didn't get the PvP-allowed flag for some reason. I'll get it fixed for the next reset (tonight or tomorrow).

Wow, coolness . Thnaks so much for working on this.
May I ask if we can expect this feature to evolve over time as we think of ways to improve it?

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
I can mostly deal with the anti-magic in the area outside the pit. I see the logic.
What bothers me is the No Resting in that area, or the Pit Master's Office, or the Pit itself.
Casters have to blow 10-20k gold on potions of renewal each time they want to regain spells, or they have to go through at least 2 area transitions in order to regain spells... sort of annoying.

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
potions of renewal work even in areas that rest is not allowed in.
Sounds like I need to add a tent outside the pit for resting before and/or after the bouts.

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
Oh, and things may not work right in the pit for a few days. It turns out that when you set the server to no-pvp, it's ALL areas, even those individually tagged as full-pvp.
I'm currently working through every area in the game, manually changing the setting on each, so that it won't rely on a server-wide setting.
Even though the server is non-pvp, keep in mind that on D&D Hardcore difficulty setting (which Aenea uses), area spells will still affect yourself and others.

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
Couple of PvP observations:
* Barnabas was testing flawed Lysis bracers, and was instructed to kill his mentor; same was also done to Barnabas by Crideas. I failed to alter settings, I believe.
* Aurora was heavily involved in a recent event, and I completely forgot to check my settings again.
In both cases, no penalties were noted. But I wished to post this in case some should have been in play. Was this OK since both were DM's?

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
Precisely.
In the normal course of a session, you should *never* have to worry about another PC attacking or using skills like pickpocket on your PC without your *express* consent.
You no longer need to worry about PvP settings, this has been automated for the arena, which is the only place it should matter.
The only setting players need be concerned with is the "Hostility" settings in their player window. This setting is your view of like or dislike towards each specific character that is logged in. If you wish attack abilities and spells to properly affect another PC in the arena, you will need to set this to "dislike" for that PC. (we did this when we tested your bracers)
For the event in question, Aurora - while technically a PC, was controlled by a DM, announced openly and ahead of time that she was fair game for PvP in that event, and was also under instructions to attack another player only if attacked by that player first (then the gloves could come off) and be mindful of her aoe's for the same purpose. Due to these facts, as the Dm running the event, I approved Aurora for PvP outside the Arena without penalty.
If anyone has issue with this, please send me a PM and we will discuss it, but I am not at all interested in debating the issue with regards to changes in the Aenea PvP rules.
If any other case, if a PC is caught performing PvP acts outside the arena without the *express* consent of their target, there will be swift and very stiff consequences. As always, we *strongly* recommend that PvP be confied to the Arena if at all possible. (side note: if for whatever reason, you do get the consent of another player to do PvP stuff in their PC, in order to avoid "he said, She said", please screenshot the chat where consent was granted, so if any questions arise, the Dms will be able to review the info. Better to err on the side of cuation and use the Arena regardless....)

Re: Nov. 26: PvP Alteration
I've enjoyed several consensual PvP encounters outside of the Arena, the most memorable being around Beholders that forced the participants to adapt to the circumstances.
I'm glad for both the safeguards that minimize "griefing", as well as the opportunity for us to take whacks at each other if mutually agreed by both parties.
