Just to make it a bit easier...
I would like folks who have gathered the materials for an upgrade to organize those materials in separate pouches from the items for other upgrades. This makes it MUCH simpler and faster to verify the materials against the list.
Also I think it would be good to have a working list, so... please post in this thread the name of any character you have that is waiting to have upgrades done.
So Far:
1. Lyme_gg (which characters?)

One question I have had regarding upgraded items. There is at least one item has reccomended against using as a base for upgrades. What is the plan/policy for items in the event other potential items need autoupdated (for game balance)... say for example the Boots of Striding and Springing"? Will upgrades to any such item be lost, or is there some magic to prevent this? Are there any other items that should be avoided?

Lyann is awaiting upgrades, all sorted into separate bags, except the elemental upgrades which are together in two bags sorted by kind, ie. Rods,wands etc together, essences together, bom and crystal together etc.

As far as lost enhancements go, keep track of what's on what - I know that you can have a DM reconstruct the item for you, as long as it's not too enhanced *cough*kitten*cough*! I've done it a few times, so it is something that's do-able.

Is reconstruction possible? Yes.
Is it something that is a quick, easy, or encouraged solution? Not so much.
I have a somewhat ad-hock record of what upgrades I have done to what Items, but it is by no means comprehensive. I am not really enthused about the concept of trying to keep a master database of who had what upgrade done to what item for what character.
A player can keep track of this, sure, and although I don't think anybody here would be dishonest about needing an upgrade replaced that they never had done in the first place... its still a possibility that we can't really do much to prevent. The main goal is to avoid replacing or reimbursing upgrades in general. There are a few exceptions, but these should be kept to a minimum.
As for items that will get auto-replaced... its really difficult if not impossible to predict what items that will be needed for. When it does happen, the original item gets destroyed, and the replacement will not have any upgrades on it. I think one of the best ways to prepare for such an instance is to try and keep upgrades on a custom item that will most likely never be redesigned.
If you already have a bunch of upgrades on a regular in-game item, the best you can really do is save a screenshot of the item's properties window... but even those can be doctored... but its better than nothing if a question arises about what upgrades were on an item that got auto-replaced. I agree, dave - perhaps I should've clarified this issue, that I am not encouraging players to perpetually chase DMs for item additions/upgrades/replacements. But I do remember a few times when items have mysteriously gone poof, and reconstructions have been made. That's all - more of a "we're not sure why your item disappeared, we'll help you as best we can to replace it", not "sure, you crystalled up a single-use item - we'll gladly replace it for you".
I am willing to be flexible with what little time I have to a certain point, but the best course of action is to follow dave's advice and try to keep upgrades in a custom-item kind of way, so that if there's an issue, it's in the toolset and easy to replace. The other kind of upgrades have an inherent danger to them ... sort-of a "let the buyer beware", "play at your own risk", "swimming area without a lifeguard", etc. kind of thing ...

As an interesting side-note to upgrading items being lost/replaced/updated ... I agree that adding upgrades to one of your custom items is likely to be the best course of action (the only time these should get replaced is when you submit a new one to )...
.... however for players that have NEVER got/chosen a custom item ~ why not get something you can *replicate* easily in-game and use that ...
eg :: You want your level drain immunity ring to have upgrades (the bone ring, in-game item, special property: Immunity to level/abs drain, as with ANY in-game item with a special property it is likely to be on the replaced/adjusted for balance reasons/updated information list) ....
So ... ... get yourself ANY NORMAL RING, a copper ring, star sapphire ring etc... your first property to collect for in this instance is the Immunity to Level/Abs drain ##378 = Immunity Misc: Level/Ability Drain## (and possibly a mage/crafter for an icon change).. thus you have *replicated* your in-game highly-likely-to-change-item with something not so likely to change... then add your further properties from there on....
(Also easily doable with +XAC cloaks, I mean how many plain old boring cloaks does Aenea have, everywhere ... , Soft Leather boots, Plain old clothing/armour, plain weapons((likely from a goblin))...those are just the things that came to mind when writing this )....
Do the DM's agree this is possibly a good idea ??
PS.. the convo list is currently at 434 = Mighty+1, with Mighty, OnHit, Regen, Unlimited Ammo and Weight xxx nodes left to go... plus final spell/grammar checking and formalisation/standardisation to look over too... and some bug testing on my part.. .. I may not have much time any more, but I ain't giving up on this .... ...

There seems to be one minor issue with the constructs' inventory resetting when it is spoken to (when the upgrade option is chosen) or whenever its inventory is opened.... I think this has to do with the script re-adding it to the PC's party each time either of those choices are made. If we can get that fixed I think it will be a wonderful help.
As for the using nonmagical, common in-game items like normal rings for upgrades, it is a workable option, I think. They are quite unlikely to be auto-replaced... and certainly not for "balance" reasons. If I think of it, or am reminded by a player while I am doing upgrades... I would have no problem taking the properties of an existing in-game ring and transferring them to a normally nonmagical ring of the player's choice before doing the upgrades in order to help avoid any auto-replacement woes.

And do we know if it can be applied to all manner of things (I'm thinking along the lines of daggers ...)

I see the spell is in game, but that's no guarantee that it's available on scroll, either in store or as a drop, or scribeable. Hence my question

Apparently Grabthar's Hammer and Bone Throw, while both being in game.... and being usable as scrolls.... are not castable by wizards/sorcerors who memorize them.... meaning they are also not scribable.
Odd that the scrolls can be used, but the memorized spells cant....
Anyhow... in the meantime until that issue is fixed, you may substitute a scroll of spiritual weapon.

Due to changes in the availability of Books of Infinite Spells and Rings of Magic Defenses, these items are no longer needed for the +5 Spellcraft skill upgrades. Nor is the book of infinite spells needed for the Immunity to Evocation upgrade.
In their place, a simple scroll of Fox's Cunning will suffice (along with the other items on the list, of course).

Some suggestions for organizing your gathered materials to speed up the process of the upgrade for you and the DM (and making it easier on the DM as well):
1. Pick up some gem pouches to separate materials for different upgrades. Gem pouches are sold by Billy Mard out front of Mountainholm Castle, as well as Bertie Bighands in the Macedone Trade District.
2. Once you have materials separated into pouches, use the ;;tool itemname xxxxx command to rename the pouches to include:
a) the item property code in parentheses
b) the name of the property
c) the name of the item you want it added to.
For example:
;;tool itemname (378) Level/Ability Drain Immunity to Ring of Power
This will give the DM doing the upgrades a bunch of useful information just by mousing over the Pouch. Speeds things up a lot
3. Please double- and triple-check your lists to make sure you have everything on the list before contacting a DM to do your upgrades.
It is pretty frustrating to stop what I am doing on my PC, log onto my DM, go to meet someone's PC, get all the info on what they want done, start checking all the lists, only to have to tell the PC they are missing things.... and then either have to wait around for them to go grab things, or have to log off my DM, and get back into my PC again, to be soon interrupted to do those same upgrades a short while later. This is a completely avoidable waste of both of our time.
Follow these 3 steps, and the upgrade process will go more smoothly and more quickly, which is a win-win situation!

Ye know step 3 there almost seems targeted towards a certain individual that can't manage to get things on a sheet of paper reading the same as the stuff on the screen in front of him .... .... I'm so glad I don't know anyone that has completely managed to mess up a simple gathering list by not having all the items ...... ....
Just as a side note... is the DM assistant dialogue thing working on the DM side ? I remember we had issue's with it wiping the inventory when clicked on .... I think this had something to do with the auto-assigning of the henchman thingi, but it would be great to see this working correctly in-game.... ....
Also as a note to the above, if you don't fancy getting gem pouches I think the scribe-book-sellers sell a "notebook" item, that can be used as a container and looks slightly cooler ... ...

Please have a look at this post to learn what materials are needed for your upgrades to be done.
The Cast Spell: haste property cannot be done as an in-game upgrade, unfortunately. You will need a Custom item for any Cast Spell properties, I recommend a rod.

And, immunity to knockdown is not available for PC custom items (and hence, dwarf or maker upgrades). There are a few items in-game that grant it, but it's not something to be added to other items.

Well, the most you would ever need would be only a +3 Dex tome, never a +5....
It goes like this:
Desired Dex Enhancement +2 = you need a total of +1 in Dex tomes.
Desired Dex Enhancement +4 = you need a total of +2 in Dex tomes (could be one +2 tome, or two +1 tomes).
Desired Dex Enhancement +6 = you need a total of +3 in Dex tomes (could be one +3 tome, or one +2 tome and one +1 tome, or three +1 tomes).
