Used: Vampire Mages

I have killed a lot of Vampire Mages.

As practitioners of the Arcane Arts, they are quite powerful. As immortals of the night, they are long lived.

Yet, somehow, despite their power, longevity, and intelligence... they never seem to be carrying
anything magical.

I mean, Vampires mages are only one step below liches... both are undead, vampires just have less spellpower in exchange for slightly better physical abilities and regeneration.

Liches often have some really nice, powerful magical loot. Vampire mages only seem to ever have a single nonmagical ring or necklace.

It would be nice to see immortal spellcasters of *all* types actually collect rare and powerful items... that can be taken from them after they are defeated.

Heh well...i have the van richtens guide to liches...and that subject is brought up in it. They state exactly what your saying...and the reason why they dont carry tons of loot with them is two reasons.

A.they feel that being so powerful they dont need to rely on it anymore .

B.They know it makes them a prime target for destruction for mortals who want thier stuff. So they leave it in thier castle/stronghold/lair.

Sorry if that bursts your bubble, ive thumbed through the vampires book but didnt read it in depth but i imagine they have the same reasons. In the mod *Ravenloft* Strahds stats listed him as carrying literally nothing on him..course...even naked he could kick the butt of a party of 10 players

On the surface, those two points would seem logical.

However, as their conditition and disposition clearly shows a megalomaniacal bent, the above logic does not fit such creatures. Being powerful with no items is good, certainly, but more power is better. Especially because they often choose to *start* conflicts with their victims, not wait and hide and hope they wont be hunted down. In these cases they would come equipped and loaded for bear because they are intelligent, and would not risk failure due to trying to "protect" their items more than their own existence.
