Suck is... finding out that your job contract that you thought HAD been signed for an extra 5 years service has been declined admission by some snob higher official that wants to simply cut manpower... ...and leaving you with 14 days left in both your current job and current house. Yes, as many of you know I WAS in the military... I just discovered today that pen-pusher has decided to decline my application for further service... leaving me with a mere 14 days on my current contract.... ... ... however he made HIS decision on the 17th December and "didn't think it was important enough to inform me, then promptly forgot after the Christmas break unitl now" ..... .... what a complete d!ck.

He has never met me in person...so this is where service members really start to feel like "just a number".... ... 14 days to finish all my current work, find another job and move house (because we're currently in military accommodation)... and then find new schools for the kids and the wife another job too... ... ...

So much to do, with so little time... all because some idiot sucks at his job... his single job - inform people of the status of their paperwork. For the last year I've been holding FOUR different positions (and without blowing my own trumpet, excelling at all of them).. good fu*king luck finding a replacement... ... .... ..... .... 12 years service and there is nothing I can now do to rectify the situation... ...

Sorry Rusty. I would voice a formal complaint with the equivalent of an Inspector General, and use the chain of command as much as within your rights to do so. That is what they are supposed to be there to do. Allow your past service to speak for itself, and recommend against burning bridges.

Man, so sorry to hear that Rusty, hope all turns out ok for you guys. This really does just suck huge.

That is utter and total suck... No way to get any extension on the house? That's rather effed up to toss a serviceman out with two weeks notice, especially one with wife and kids, especially when it's some desk jockey's foul up that's to blame.

It's surprising that there was nothing that * I * could do to improve the situation personally or by my chain of command..... but the local media and MP managed to speak with my station commander on my behalf .... the power of external civilian pressure (I was advised to state my case to them by the British Legion, an external company that helps and advises servicemen, wither they are still serving or not... they even helped me contact the media and the MP, with example letters... something tells me this is not the 1st time something like has happened... ... )

So ... as it currently stands we are entitled to stay in our current accommodation until a suitable house is found, however there is no chance that the paperwork for my loss of a job can be changed, (I'm now past the point of being able to re-enlist for my current role) as of 12th March I will no longer be a serving airman

Not the best result,  still losing my job... but at least the family won't be homeless ... ....

Wow, Rusty... what a total disservice to your service history. I know I hve heard of some horror stories that happened to veterans in the US military (mostly army), usually ones who were wounded in action... but nothing like ending up with no income and losing housing with 14 days notice. I am very glad there seems to be some organizations available to make sure that sort of bollocks gets scrutinized and rectified as much as possible. I wish you the best of luck sir...

Suck is... customers from hell.  One gets pissed off at me because I won't take his extremely bad counterfeit hundred dollar bill, another gets pissed because I won't stop checking out the long ass line of other customers do go do her shopping for her, and then she cusses me out and knocks a ton of stuff off the shelf in a hissy fit, then another gets mad at me because we don't carry furniture (for fucks sake it's not Ikea, lady!) Another didn't understand how that new fangled plumbing stuff works and I had the joy of cleaning that up, another gets an attitude because I told him to stop harassing the one young girl on my shift...

And I had to wear a nice pleasant smile through it all rather than beat people over the head with a crowbar... that was probably the suckiest part of the night....

After a long day in a new job, unpacking in a new house, finally getting your old PC put back together and backing up 90% of your accumulated "stuff" onto a new bigger external hard drive.... and mid way through having the ancient and old PC decide it will crash... ... ... My tons of NWN stuff from the old vault, my own custom stuff and a host of old CEP, CCP, AeneaHaks ... as well a metric ton of MechCommanderGold, Mech Commander Omnitech, MechWarrior 3 and 4, Portal 2, Oolite, Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun/Firestorm "custom content stuff" gathered over the decade (possibly nearing) that I have had my computer..... GONE. No longer on the PC.. not on the new Hard Drive either...... ..... I think I've lost a few dozen films and 1000's of family photos too and have also possibly corrupted my iTunes music library (iTunes is failing to load at the moment so I can't confirm).... ....

To put it in context I tried bulk moving my personal file.. just shy of around 200GB of data onto my new 1TB external hardrive.. my PC only had 250GB on the internal drive and was running rather slowly.... ... I've lost nearly everything... in an attempt to save and preserve it all....

I'm reporting this here, basically because this is one of the few communities that I know will be able to share this pain/grief/torment with me... and that lessens the blow a little.... as a grown man I really feel like curling into a little ball and just..crying... yep, crying.... .... ...

This is my usual reaction to almost any Tech hiccup, though I have grown accustomed to my being ignorant enough of the true issues that I no longer panic. In such times, it is good to:

* Pound something (recommend a pillow).
* Ice cream (French vanilla or strawberry are especially therapeutic).
* Nap.

After a few hours, then look again with new eyes and a fresh perspective.

Hi ALL...
It's been a long couple of months... .... new PC rig set up... running windows 10... recovered 90% of my old files from my old hard drive thanks to the tech genius at my local PC/tech store... everything HAD moved onto the new hard drive, just with no direct access setup. It was all put in a hidden compressed "backup" folder.... and needed "a little prompting" to unpack it. A wonderful Christmas present all for a small £75 fee. Yep, I can handle that. I now have my music, films, saved games/custom content and most of my photos back. I'm still not quite 100% sure what I have and what is lost, but the guy said that it transferred most of my files but didn't finalize it... he went into a lot of technical jargon that was a little lost on me but I got most of what he was saying...

Long story short, once I've unpacked my NWN disks (and sorted out any Windows10/re-installing issues) I should be able to get back in-game in the new year ... ... re-installing issues, I think I've only ever re-installed NWN once, back when it was still a supported game... is there a place we can still get all the updates/critical rebuild stuff from ? Guess I'll be off to have a good look around "the new vault" and "NWN Community"..... ...

Good to hear it, and all the best with the installation.

Glad things worked out, sir.  I wish you hadn't needed to spend money on it, there are freeware/trialware file recovery tools like the one I linked for you that can accomplish such miracles - they just take time to run once the drive is hooked up to a PC.

I look forward to your return, of course, and if you need assistance with files, I believe I have a solution where I can link you to my private cloud storage for them - just let me know if it comes to that.
