Turning Undead
In Aenea, the power to turn undead is altered slightly from standard NWN.
Evil characters do not turn or destroy undead. Such characters instead either rebuke (stun) or command (dominate) them (this still uses the Turn Undead feat/ability).
Characters with the following classes can turn undead:
Cleric
Paladin
Blackguard (rebuke/command only)
Dead Stalker (semi-class, turn/destroy only)
The mechanics:
"turn roll" = d20 + Charisma modifier
"turn damage" = 2d6 + class level
The "turn roll" is used to determine the maximum Hit Die of undead that you can turn/rebuke. The result ranges from (class level - 4) to (class level + 4).
The "turn damage" is the total number of Hit Dice of undead you can turn/rebuke on this attempt. This gets spread amongst the surrounding undead, beginning with the closest. Think of it like a "supply" of divine energy...you start with the "turn damage" amount and you use it up 1 point per undead Hit Die as the script cycles through the surrounding undead.
Your "class level" can come from different sources:
- cleric levels: every cleric level counts
- paladin levels: paladins turn as if a cleric of 2 levels lower (so at 3rd level they turn like a 1st level cleric) (never subtracts from total)
- blackguard levels: blackguards turn as if a cleric of 2 levels lower (so at 3rd level they turn like a 1st level cleric) (never subtracts from total)
- dead stalker levels: if non-evil and not a cleric/paladin/blackguard, a dead stalker turns undead a if a cleric of 3 times his/her dead stalker levels.
These "class levels" can stack:
- total "class level" = cleric turning + (paladin turning or blackguard turning)
- if a non-evil dead stalker, each dead stalker level also counts: "class level" = cleric turning + paladin turning + dead stalker level
Turn Results (good/neutral characters):
- If the undead's Hit Dice are less than the maximum turning Hit Dice, it turns in fear for a short time and attempts to flee.
- If the character's "class level" is 2 or more times the undead's Hit Dice, that undead is instead destroyed outright.
Rebuke Results (evil characters):
- If the undead's Hit Dice are less than the maximum turning Hit Dice, it is paralyzed for a short time.
- If the character's"class level" is 2 or more times the undead's Hit Dice, that undead is instead dominated by the character for a time (joining the character's party and attacking his/her enemies).
Example:
John, 3rd level cleric of Dalix (with a 14 Charisma), enters the graveyard. Encountering a group of 5 normal skeletons (1 Hit Die each) and a normal zombie (2 Hit Dice), he pulls out his holy symbol and calls upon Dalix to turn away the undead.
// turning check (d20 ends up a 12, 2d6 ends up with 6)
"turn roll" ---> 12 + 2 (Cha mod) = 14 (max HD turned is class level + 1 ... 4)
"turn damage" ---> 6 + 3 (class level) = 9
// cycle through the undead
zombie (2 HD)...turned (7 "turn damage" remaining)
skeleton 1 (1 HD)...destroyed (6 "turn damage" remaining)
skeleton 2 (1 HD)...destroyed (5 "turn damage" remaining)
skeleton 3 (1 HD)...destroyed (4 "turn damage" remaining)
skeleton 4 (1 HD)...destroyed (3 "turn damage" remaining)
skeleton 5 (1 HD)...destroyed (2 "turn damage" remaining)
