May 15, 2010: Hak Files Update

Hak List Update:

This coming Saturday (May 15), I will be adding a "new" hak file to the required list for playing on Aenea. The new file will be called "aeneahak_r.hak", and will really just be a repackaging of the currently huge "aeneahak_updates.hak" file.

I'll be making the files available on the Vault download page Friday, along with a slimmed-down updates hak (emptied out and ready for me to fill up again). They'll be available through WorldGate as well at that time. I could make it available now, but anyone downloading and decompressing the new file versions would be unable to play until the server is updated Saturday.

Just wanting to give everyone a head's up.

New Spells:

flame blade - will conjure a blade of magical fire for a short duration (Drd 2)

blade of the life eater - will conjure a magical blade that takes hitpoints from those hit and gives them to the caster (Sor/Wiz 3)

thunderblade - will conjure a shocking blade for smiting enemies (Drd 3, Clr 3: Borzig clerics only)

fog - fill the current area with dense fog (Drd 2, Clr 2: Aquar, Borzig, Typhis clerics only)

tripgust - knock an enemy's feet out from under them with a small burst of wind (Drd 1, Clr 1: Typhis clerics only)

Spell Icons:

Revamping a few of the spell icons to update them in-game.

Scroll Icons:

Revamping a few of the scroll icons to update them in-game.


Yes, has managed to grab a minute here and there over the last few weeks to use Photoshop and do some minor coding.

It's nice to see that you can get away every now and then! Thank you, Amethyst - we all appreciate everything that you do for this wonderful world you maintain for us! Right, guys?

Indeed, great work as always ! The attention to detail is one of the best things about Aenea.

We like new goodies..... new spells and scroll icon's huh ?.. Guess I'll be having some work come my way soon enough (adding them to the coloured scrolls hak ~ else they'll just look out of place ) .... ...

As always, you never cease to amaze me . You manage to not only squeeze in enough time for us, you do it amidst what I would think could be one of the most hectic times of your life. How you do it is entirely beyond me.

That's not to mention the high quality of your work or the attention to detail that you put into the world...

I've uploaded the new hak and tlk files to the Vault page. Not on WorldGate yet.

If you download this before the May 15 server reset, don't decompress the files yet as you won't be able to properly play in Aenea (the new "updates" hak is basically empty, so you'd be missing tons of content that you currently have for the game).

I'll put up the WorldGate update tonight sometime.

If I may.... might the download list on the vault be trimmed up a bit? There's lots of outdated files up there....

I don't know what's involved with that either, so I'm not sure how much work that amounts to...

You need:
JUL_09 PLAYER PACK (or PATCH for previous players)
AUG_09 PATCH
MAY_10 PATCH

Next time I do a little update, you'll also need:
aeneahak_updates
aenea.tlk

or use WorldGate for less "bookkeeping".

It says MAY_09 above , whereas the actual file is MAY_10 (and we are in that year, on this planet at any rate).... ...

But couldn't you just get the latest update and bypass the July/August update packs?

The July/August ones contain content that is not yet in the "base" PLAYER PACK and not included in the latest "PATCH" or in the aeneahak_updates.hak.

Once I have more time, I'm going to put together a new "full" PLAYER PACK download. But that will take quite a bit of time, since it's many hundreds of MBs of stuff to compress, then upload, then wait for BeyondThePale to manually transfer over to the Vault page.

The new spells are nice.

Just a note for other players though, the new thunderblade/fireblade spells, the spell will drop the weapon into your inventory... it's a dagger (1x1 inventory square). GOtta look hard to find it... it doesn't show as a dagger, just as a black ball, so it's kinda hard to see, but it's there.

Inventory icon fix in next hak update in a week or so. Spell will autoequip it after I get into the toolset to fix that.

Oh, and this actually means 99% of spell icons and 100% of scroll icons.

I'm a bit confused. So do we download/decompress the latest May_10 PATCH file but *not* the updates.hak yet?

The updates hak is just on the list for those players that might read the entry description and go "hey, where's the update hak that I just read about?". Right now it only has an extra copy of the icon for aid (since for some reason a totally empty hak file doesn't seem to play well on my PC).

The updates one will be used in about a week as I make some minor fixes (like with the inventory icons for the new "blade" spells).

Eep! I'm in the process of building my house. (Paid for it already, just taking my time getting things where I want them etc.) Do I have to do it all over again? Or will I have to add/replace any files to get it up to date?

Two options for you:

A) Update your build module...

Open your module in the toolset. Go to Edit > Module Properties > Custom Content. Add aeneahak_r to the list of haks and move it just under cep2_custom and aeneahak_updates. Click OK. Save your module.

B) Export to new build module...

Open your module in the toolset. Go to File > Export.... Select area files and export your area. Close the module. Open the new build module. Do a File > Import and bring in the area you just exported. Save the new build module with your area in it.

Ah cool, I'll just add aeneahak_r, saves me DL'ing the module again Cheers .

Suppose I should try my hand at some kind of spell-user one day, all these lovely updates for new spells etc. and I've never seen one let alone cast one...

Damn me and my melee preference.

That's not a bad thing. Beuttleria is mostly melee-ers, and we don't now contain any meleers who -can't- wield a weapon.

All Beuttlerians are soldiers. Some also cast spells, but if you can't wield a weapon (preferably without having to go through a minute-long spell cycle), you're probably not a Beuttlerian.

Even though some Beuttlerians have fists, but i assume since gauntlets are worn then i do wield a weapon.
