The Amethyst Dragon,

those boots are helluva cool! I just wonder, is there any way we can get the base crafting requirements down from 8? maybe to 4 or 5 even? 8 is a lotta waiting to get to a really cool customization feature!

Any way at all (I vote for crafting base rank of 3 officially)? Please? Please? Pleasepleaseplease?

I like the idea of the base rank requirement being low. For appearance modification it should be easy.

The only really tough thing should be crafting a set of padded armor into a set of full plate (and the boots arent used for that) Razz

If you have a base skill below 8, they won't give you the crafting options, they just say to leave the boots alone. Once you get over 8, then the options appear.

It's modified, not base I modified some armor just this past tuesday with a PC who had 0 base craft armor, but 8 modified craft armor.

I think Manny is correct. I still favor the lower requirements just for modifying appearances because there is no mechanical benefit, its just for 'cool' factor... the game is more fun when your character looks the way you want them to.

As for turning one type of base armor into another.... I was being serious, however it seems that what I thought was possible has been changed. It used to be that you could take a set of clothes or a robe with a certain base AC value and craft them into a set of armor with another AC value or vice versa without changing the magical properties of the item itself. The bigger the change, and - I believe - the more valuable the item, then the more expensive and higher difficulty of the craft check. Not sure why Sronj's doesnt allow this now... it would actually make having higher ranks in craft skills useful.

I suppose I would like to suggest that this eventually be made an option (again). Smile

If that's the case, I'd still like to see the reqs come down, because it's hard for a low level pc to have access to items that have a +8 crafting bonus. Whereas, if I desire, and I usually do, all my pcs out the gate have 3s in armor and weapon crafting. For as dave pointed out, the benefit of the boots is merely visual, and not a gamebreaker in any way. For this reason I suggested the drop in the crafting requirement for the boots, because any of my pcs can use sronj's dummies just fine (thanks RustyDios!).

The crafting idea for adjusting base AC's is a great one.

As said, makes craft ranks very desirable, and it's be great for versatility. That blackguard can get a hold of a suit of Blood Armor.. and with enough skill, can add plating to it.

The point about "it's just a cool factor" is actually quite valid. The armor crafting mannequins allow that, although it's very pricey for the AC8 armors (1700 for those, everything else is 300). And given that many of the really cool looking shields/weapon parts are voucher only anyway, a looser restriction on widely available parts isn't too bad.

I'm kinda curious as to why there's a skill check to change your weapon appearance, but not to change your armor.

It may just be to avoid annoyance, because it takes a lot more tweaking to get your armor how you want it (especially if you're a primadonna like Derik).

I suppose this makes sense, as armor aesthetics are more important to me as well. But considering it's all just for looks, why not let everything be skill check free? Especially since one needs to invest points into the crafting skills just to be able to use the boots in the first place...

Agreed 100%.

I think skill checks should only come in when you are going for some sort of mechanical benefit from whatever crafting change you are trying to make.
