Re: windows 7 pains
You have to run it under Windows XP option. Right click your shortcut, properties, compatibility tab, check mark "run this program in compat...". Keep it as XP sp3. For giggles, run it as administrator. Apply, OK, done. It will start.
Go into your NWN folder and make a shortcut on the desktop your nwnmain.exe. Right click, properties. In the shortcut tab, there's a Target: box. After nwnmain.exe, hit a space, then paste in +connect 68.3.54.71:5121
Apply, OK, done. Now you can skip all that intro advertising and junk.

Re: windows 7 pains
Also a good idea to go onto the nwn.ini and change CPU affinity to -2 in game options.

If I recall from when others helped me, it may be in the nwn.ini file; only place I recall changing settings manually.

Re: windows 7 pains
So you tried all the tweaks on this page that Dave mentioned above? Including trying Client CPU Affinity=1 ?
And can you even run the game just on your computer in solo mode, like the OC or a module, without logging into an online server?
Do you by chance have the capability of running the XP Virtual Machine that is offered as an option in Win 7? This is more of an emulator than compatibility mode.

Re: windows 7 pains
The other things I have read prescribe redoing the 1.69 critical rebuild and then adjusting the ini files for windowed mode.

Re: windows 7 pains
i did that too...it was a total clean install with the crit rebuild with windowed mode. I went thru the entire page and tried it all....every time it gets to the load bar the game crashes instantly. My next option is to try to install the 12 gauge to bill gates face.
btw what/where is the virtual machine thing?

Re: XP Virtual Machine for Win7
I'm not very familiar with Win7 yet, as my own computer is still XP, and my husband only lets me poke around in his Win7 when something goes wrong. So mostly I've been learning about getting around the annoying permissions issues. But when we got his Win7 machine built, we had the shop set up the capability to run the Virtual Machine with XP Mode, for the very reason of using it in case we couldn't get games to work. But we haven't initialized it yet.
On Win7 Pro, Win7 Ultimate, and Win7 Enterprise, you are licensed to have the capability for the functions of a Virtual Machine, they call it the MicroSoft Virtual PC, so that your Win7 machine can host a 'guest operating system'. Within this you have the choice to use XP Mode as your guest operating system, or there are also a couple other guest operating systems like Vista or another version of Win7 that they have their VM capable of hosting.
See Microsoft Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode.
If you have Win7 Pro, Win7 Ultimate, or Win7 Enterprise, then you can download the Virtual PC with XP Mode here. When we had my husband's computer built at a custom shop, we had to tell them to set up the capability for us to do this, so I'm not sure if all the BIOS and whatever OS toggles are set up for it in just any off-the-rack computer that wasn't advertised as having this capability, even if it does have these OSes in which this capability is licensed to function.
Now if you don't have one of these two OSes for which the XP Mode MicroSoft Virtual PC is authorized, there are ways to gain an XP emulator anyway, for a Win7 or even for a Vista system. This article shows you how to install the VMware Player, another Virtual Machine not from MicroSoft (after all, MS did not invent the idea of a Virtual Machine):
Create an XP Mode for Win7 Home and Vista
That's as much as I know at this point, not having had the need to do this yet. I'm saving my XP OS disk though, so that when my XP system finally needs replacing, I'll be able to set up any future uncertain OS machine with a VM of XP.

Re: windows 7 pains
Try to play on some other PWs, and see if that works. Because the game works for local games, the issue isnt directly with windows 7 (indirectly, yes, but if it were directly, then even local games would crash).
Basically if it crashes when loading into all PWs, thats going to be an issue with the game files or settings for multiplayer.
If the game only crashes when loading to Aenea, then thats going to be an issue with custom content files.

Re: windows 7 pains
Been there, done that. Glad you got it working. I do have to point out that redownloading and re-installing fresh copies of CEP and is on my list of common issue fixes. Would have saved yourself time and frustration if you went down the list in order
