Parially Used: Jump Tool Empty Parially Used: Jump Tool

Post by Alundaio Fri Mar 12, 2010 4:45 pm

I think it does more harm then good. Although very fun to use in all sorts of situations it can be used as a short range free transference. You can jump through any wall or door. Even jump to places that are completely inaccessible like inside player houses. Atleast with transference it could be blocked on certain maps.

I know the limitations of Nwn will prevent it from ever being free from exploits. Perhaps there may be a way to limit this tool. Like for example when you use the tool it will calculate the distance between an ivisible marker. If the player is within the area of the point he can jump freely. So if you put this marker in the middle of a lava pit he should be able to willingly jump across at any point the marker allows. The script could work similar to the search for chair script but only activated when you use the jump tool. It may also be possible to do the same thing with traps too. Of course this is all just theories as to I haven't really spent any time learning any of the nwscript functions.

All in all if none of that can be done or work, I vote to remove the tool. I remember how happy I was the first time I found a jumper's amulet and was able to finally get to some secret spots. That's all ruined with the current jump system.

I've been looking at ways to limit it's use, and will be experimenting with one of them very soon. I'm also not happy with the little widget's exploitive ability.

It's good for places where there aren't jump markers... like jumping over the neg-damaging sorgath symbols in the drow temple, or jumping up onto ledges, or just for jumping for the fun of jumping.

No.. I knew it existed, I just didn't see a point in it.. much.... but with the answers provided above I can see how it can be very usefully used.....

How about scripting it for a "line of sight to target" check ?... ... I'm sure there was something like that in the toolset ??.... That would prevent abuse of jumping through walls, doors, up super-steep cliffs (but not down them) and possibly uber-distances.... ... ...basically if you (your PC) can see where you want to jump to, you can make an attempt to do it....

I don't know; the widget only activates a relatively short distance away, and if you've got a jump check of 106 or so, why not up super-steep cliffs and over high walls?

The distance is limited. Even if you got incredibly high (90+) jump skill, the tool only works to a given distance, even if you would have the jump skill to jump a higher DC.

Yeah I can understand high scores allowing jumping up cliffs etc, after all with some of the things our PC's can do compared to "normal" folk that's highly possible... but THROUGH interior walls and doors ? (And yes that works I tested it yesterday).... .... ....

If it worked like targeting an Area spell that would probably fix some of the problems.

Not really. Spells cast off items can be cast without LOS.

However... that does spark an idea for a fix... turn the widget into one of the player-tool feats. The Farstep master bounding step (transference) feat requires LOS just like the spell itself (which scrolls/items dont)... so if there was a jump feat that worked just like the bounding step feat (but with jumping instead of transference), that would eliminate jumping through walls/doors.

I am fairly certain that spells cast from items cant be cast thru closed doors, at least not in indoor areas.

I'm 100% certain they can be cast through doors/solid tileset walls. I used the farstep boots to transfer past a door just yesterday. Spells off items have always ignored the LOS rules.

Jump tool now requires line of sight, so no more using it to bypass doors/walls. You can still use it to bypass walls of iron/stone/etc., but that's because I wanted to still allow spell/arrow use through the barrier spells.
